Samsung’s INNOV8 i8510 camera phone gets DivX certified

Monday, July 28th, 2008

If Samsung’s INNOV8 i8510 8-megapixel camera is not enough to convince you to buy this new phone once it’s released, its video playback capability might make you do so. The i8510 has been certified by DivX, Inc., making it only the fifth DivX certified mobile handset made by Samsung.

Being DivX certified means the i8510 will make it easy for users to transfer video content from their PCs to the mobile phones through the phone’s TV-out feature allowing users to view PC-like high-quality images and DivX video when and wherever they want. The i8510 runs on Symbian 60 OS and as such, it can also boast of being the first Symbian-powered mobile phone that has been DivX-certified.

Shampoo Shower Radio camouflages your radio

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Shower radios are usually fairly boring, but they get the job done.  In the end all you really need is to have a radio blaring your favorite tunes to drown out your off key voice.  It’s pretty basic really, find the station you need and you’re good to go.  However, most designs do stand out a bit in the shower.  It just looks like a radio which isn’t very interesting.  With this radio, it may  not be anything exciting or different, however, it will definitely blend in with the rest of your shampoos and conditioners.

It is available in a several different colors and even what brand you would like printed on the bottle.  Like Pantene or Head and Shoulders.  That way it’ll mix a bit more nicely with what’s already in your shower.  It also have the handy little strap to make it so you can hang it from your shower head.  Although you’re likely to have a couple of issues if you have one that is removable from the wall.  The radio uses 3 AAA batteries and is quite obviously completely waterproof.  You will have to contact them if you’d like pricing information.

Dark Knight Bat-Logo calls no one

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Every once in a while, some product comes out that looks good and is available for order, but there is very little information available about it. This leads potential customers to doubt its validity.

Such is the case for The Dark Knight Bat-Logo Project Key Ring. This product is exactly what it sounds like, a key ring that can project the bat-signal on the wall.

Unfortunately, there isn’t really a good demonstration of this product, except what you see here in this picture. Too bad there isn’t a YouTube video on the site, but the only video I see is a preview of The Dark Knight.

Many blogs have reported on this suspicion, and many have also complained that it is the old bat-signal from before Christopher Nolan’s rebooted franchise. At least the new logo is on the product.

In all honesty, I’m surprised that this product actually works. I believe that if you were to put a bat-stencil on a spotlight, you would not get the result that Commissioner Gordon sees. Maybe it works better in miniaturized mode.

Obviously, this company that makes this product is hoping for some quick profits with the gargantuan success of The Dark Knight movie. If you want to satisfy your bat-craze, feel free to shell out $16 for it on the Play.com site.

Just for the Smell of it: Scent-Emitting LCD Displays

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Every time I go to a city by a bay, like San Francisco or Seattle, I am completely saturated by an array of scents. They wash over me like multiple waves from the high-priced restaurants with views of the water, and I am compelled to shell out my money for expensive food.

A Japanese company known as Recruit Co Ltd. has found a way to follow their nose to make people some money by using special displays. These unique advertising devices, developed by NTT Communications Corporation, have a 42-inch LCD display that not only show food, but emit mouth-watering aromas.

I’m sure you see the idea. Potential customers are baited by the smells, they approach the display, and they are hooked. Restaurants can even sweeten the deal by including a coupon that will really reel them in.

Of course, I’m not certain how the smell is emitted. What is this, a scratch n’ sniff sticker that doesn’t need any scratching? Maybe the restaurant actually prepares one of its dishes, and then just puts a fan behind it.

Whatever the technology, low-tech or high, I think it is about time the nose got its share of advertising. Scent is a far better lure than anything we can see or hear by far.

Meet Dilus, the Bluetooth-enabled teddy bear

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Crave reports that a Brazilian designer named Bruno Oro de Abreu has been working on a Bluetooth-enabled teddy bear aimed at reducing isolation and improving socialisation for kids with cancer, or who have to spend long periods bedridden for other reasons.

The bear has a holographic display that can be used to surf the Internet, play games, attend remote classes, and make friends with other kids who have a Dilus. It also comes in a range of designs. At the moment, this is a graduation project, but Bruno Oro de Abreu hopes to have it on the market by 2010.

I’d hate to rain on his parade, as this seems like an ingenious design with very noble goals. It’s just that… well, I still find talking teddy bears in loud designs as creepy as I did when I was 10. (But today’s kids might be braver than me!) Also, there needs to be some way to monitor exactly who your kids are talking to…

I can’t help wondering if a cute little Asus Eeepc is a better option. What do you think?
