Amazing Waterproof Coating for electronics

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

The picture tells a thousand words, and the video after the jump tells a thousand more. Golden Shellback is the name of the coating that is applied to these electronics that makes them impermeable to water. From their website:

“When applied to clean, moisture free surfaces, such as plastic, copper, aluminum, metal, ceramic, steel, tin or glass, the coating is transparent with excellent weather proofing and anti-corrosion properties. Golden Shellback coating has an excellent ability to repel oils, synthetic fluids, hazardous materials, dust, dirt and water based solutions. Low surface tension values, such as water and oils will bead and drain freely from coated surfaces. The process produces a uniform, continuous, near hermetic coating that resists rain and humidity. Electronics casually exposed to water continue to work even after exposure. The coating is readily applied and not generally considered to be removable. Repairs are made using abrasive methods. “

Strangely enough, Golden Shellback was created by the Northeast Maritime Institute, which is exactly what it sounds like! Skip forward to about 1 minute in to get to the good stuff.

Netflix on the Xbox 360 gets demonstrated on video

Can’t wait to understand what Netflix integration on the Xbox 360 will be like? Stop daydreaming and click on past the jump then, as Major Nelson takes you through the entire process on video. We could continue on explaining how easy it looks to navigate to one’s Queue, press play and pop some popcorn, but we’d rather let the aforementioned expert handle that.

Video: ReWalk exoskeleton helps paraplegics walk

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 22nd 2008 at 3:53AM
ARGO Medical Technologies’ ReWalk has been out a few months now, but it’s tough to really appreciate what this thing can do unless you see a patient utilize one on video. Hailed as a “quasi-robotic ambulation system,” the wearable device was specifically created to assist those with lower-limb disabilities and give them back upright mobility. In the video waiting in the read link, one particular individual relies on the ReWalk to stand up and move about after being stricken to a wheelchair for 20 years — no need to take our word for it, though, real live proof is but a click away.

Baseball gets hiTech, Oakland installs touch screens in new stadium

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Cisco Field will become the Oakland A’s new baseball stadium when the Green and Yellow say goodbye to Oakland Alameda County Coliseum in 2012 and when it does come online, it will be doing so literally as their sponsor, Cisco Systems, will be wiring all 35,000 seats with wireless interactive touch screens. Fans will be able to look up stats, keep score, and even order a beer or hot dog directly through the interface (and probably pay for it with your credit card while other fans overlook and copy down your number).

With complete access to various team stats and the ability to order food and drinks directly, and there’s a promise of what the A’s are calling a virtual “autograph session” as fans will be able to talk with their with favorite players through teleconferencing (yeah, we’ll see if that flies). The touch screens will guarantee an entertaining baseball experience for their fans whether the As, who placed 26 out of 30 teams last year, are winning or not. And there’s a practical side to the screens as well as fans will be able to call up data on fastest driving routes out of the park and even where are the shortest bathroom lines.

Panasonic adds the DMC-FX37 to its LUMIX Line-up

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Those who have a passion for photography are aware of Panasonic’s LUMIX range of Digital Cameras. Panasonic has extended its LUMIX portfolio with the introduction of the latest LUMIX DMC-FX37 digital camera. This 10.1-megapixel camera has a 25mm equivalent ultra-wide angle LEICA DC lens along with 5x optical zoom.

It is equipped with an intelligent scene selector that automatically selects from Scenery, Macro, Portrait, Night Portrait, and Night Scenery modes with regard to the shooting environments. Panasonic has added some fresh scene modes comprising of Film Grain, Pin Hole and Flash Burst. Additionally, the DMC-FX37 comes with a transform effect to let the users play with pics and add some humor.

Interestingly, its face detector can capture 15 faces precisely in sharp focus. The company claims that with the increased face detection accuracy and a newly added AF Tracking function, a continuous AF/AE adjustment can be achieved even when the face is turned sideways to the camera or while in movement.

Additionally the Panasonic DMC-FX37 also monitors the light source. If the light source is found behind the subject, it automatically turns on the back light compensation function. Thanks to the Intelligent Exposure function, users can click natural images. This functionality suppresses obstructed shadows and blown highlights.

The camera lets you shoot high-definition 1280 x 720p motion images at 30 fps. You can choose from available three colors; silver, black and brown. The price hasn’t been disclosed yet.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 goes live

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

by Nilay Patel, posted Jul 21st 2008 at 3:31PMThat nasty Windows Home Server data corruption bug might finally be a thing of the past, as WHS Power Pack 1 has gone live after a month-long beta test. Not much else to the enhancement suite: x64 support and support for backup to external media are along for the ride, but otherwise it’s mostly performance tweaks. Go on and grab it now, you crazy home-server admins.
