CPC WristBand

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Talking on your phone while driving without a handsfree kit is a major traffic offence in most countries, and the CPC WristBand is here to solve the problem. This sub-$10 solution comes with a universal case and a wristband that is strapped around your wrist.

Wrap the wristband around the wrist. Insert the flip or candy bar style cell phone into the clear pocket of the CPC WristBand. Now you’re free to communicate hands-free just like Dick Tracy it’s just that simple. The CPC WristBand is the world’s first and only hands-free cellular wristband accessory on the market that allows drivers over the age of 18 talk legally on the cellphone while driving. The Hands-Free cellular Wristband has been approved by Police Departments in the following countries: United States, England, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Israel and Japan.

Unfortunately, the millions of original RAZR owners as well as those who rock to its variants (RAZR V3, RAZR V3c, RAZR V3m, RAZR V3i) won’t be able to make their handset fit into the CPC WristBand universal case. The same goes for many PDA phones as well which are too large. Kinda ironic for a “universal” case if you ask me.

Becker GPS Z100 Crocodile

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Don’t worry, this GPS navigation device won’t eat you up if you fail to make the right turn at it’s instructions. The Becker GPS Z100 Crocodile is dubbed so since it comes with an outer casing that resembles a croc’s scales. Features include a 4.3″ widescreen display, maps of 40 countries in Europe thanks to Navteq (that comes in a 2GB SD memory card), an SD memory card slot, support for live traffic information and is powered by the SiRF Star III GPS receiver chip with the SiRF InstantFixII functionality. There is no word on pricing or availability, but this makes it look more of a ladies’ GPS system no thanks to the croc-like case.

Another breakthrough purportedly brings us closer to quantum computing

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 19th 2008 at 11:56PM
In reality, quite a bit of time has passed since we’ve heard of the next great leap in the (seemingly) never-ending journey towards quantum computing, but we’re incredibly relieved to learn that at least someone is still out there, somewhere, pressing on. An international team of researchers have reportedly shown that they can “control the quantum state of a single electron in a silicon transistor, even putting the electron in two places at once.” Essentially, the team is using tiny semiconductor transistors to “control the state of a quantum system,” but there is still a long ways to go before any of this is meaningful. The crew managed to discover a few things by chance, yet to create a quantum computer, they would need to “position atoms of arsenic (or some other material) in the transistors more reliably.” For those of you way too geeked out, fret not — we’ll let you know when all of this technobabble finally amounts to something.

Kohjinsha SC3 convertible UMPC hits the test bench

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 19th 2008 at 8:50PM
Shortly after the Kohjinsha SC3 was removed from the comfy confines of its packaging and exposed for all to see, said UMPC has managed to get reviewed. Initially, impressions were quite positive, as the reviewer noted that build quality was “superb,” the size was adorably small and the display satisfied all expectations. As for sheer performance, the Menlow-based rig excelled as it churned through applications with no huge lag issues; however, all that computing made the unit exceptionally warm, though it did remain quiet even when breaking a sweat. Battery life was shorter than advertised (only 2.5 hours), but aside from that, there wasn’t a whole lot to gripe about. Think it’s too good to be true? Head on down to the read link for videos, benchmarks and impressions.

Becker announces new Crocodile GPS, aka the Z100

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Becker, recently upgraded their older GPS, the GPS Z101, which was announced back in May and the upgraded version will be called the Becker Z100, which is also known as Crocodile. If you take a look at the picture above, you will see the that casing looks a bit odd and sort of resembles the skin of a crocodile, hence the name.

Moving onto the specs, it comes with a 4.3-inch touch screen display, Navteq maps which cover 40 countries in Europe, the maps are stored on a 2GB SD memory card, live traffic updates via RDS/TMC Premium. The Z100 runs on a SiRF Star III GPS receiver and uses SiRF InstantFix II. This piece of technology gets faster satellite readings, meaning maps will load faster and more accurately. Navigon also provides for the navigation software as well as 3D RealityView, which means advanced guidance. It even can show upcoming turns that are located in a special part of the overall screen.

It looks to be a good GPS, however, there is no word on pricing or availability at this time.

Cryptex phone concept

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Designer Marc Schömann has certainly done well with this new cell phone concept known as the Cryptex phone. It takes long as all get out if you’re trying to dial a number during a frantic moment, so I would reserve this for casual calls and those who love to do things extreeeeemely slow. After all, you will need to turn each individual section to the correct number before the haptic technology provides a confirmation, so imagine performing an international call. That’s a whole lot of sections to turn, and by the time you’re done, your relief is turned into frustration as you’re redirected to the voice mail instead. Good thing it comes with a vibration function though, but that ought to work well only if it has waterproof capability.
