Pope Benedict XVI texting out messages of encouragement

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 16th 2008 at 7:58AM
Don’t act like you didn’t know that Pope Benedict XVI was down with modern technology. As part of World Youth Day, the man himself will begin sending out texts of encouragement to pilgrims who have signed up through Telstra to receive them. A total of four gigantic “prayer walls” have been erected at the Sydney Opera House, the Domain, Darling Harbour and Randwick Racecourse in Australia, where folks will actually be able to send their own messages for all to presumably see. The first message sent out? “Young friend, God and his people expect much from u because u have within you the Fathers supreme gift: the Spirit of Jesus - BXVI.” Hllujh, amn brtha.

[Thanks, zedster]

Gigabyte M528 is really tiny

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Just in case you thought that the Asus Eee PC was one impressive tiny wonder, along comes Gigabyte and their diminutive M528 netbook. Measuring just 152mm x 80mm x 23mm, this small device manages to pack in full PC functionality in such a small form factor. It will be powered by the impressive Intel Atom 800MHz processor and aided by 512MB RAM, and despite the fact that it runs on Linux, it is also able to drop that and get Windows XP up and running without any problems. Power consumption works out to approximately 2.8W on average, which is always a good thing.

INFINXX AP23 Bluetooth stereo audio transmitter

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

The INFINXX AP23 holds the distinction of being the smallest iphone/ipod Bluetooth A2DP Stereo Audio Transmitter in the world, and until somebody else steps forward to dispute that claim, I’ll take Brando’s word for it. Weighing in at a mere 5 grams, this device allows you to groove to your favorite tunes from the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod without being bogged down by wires thanks to Bluetooth technology. Of course, that would mean investing in a quality pair of Bluetooth headphones, but that’s not what we’re focusing on today. Freedom from wires for $62 sounds just about right to me.

HP announces three new Photosmart printers

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

HP has announced the availability of a three new printers in their Photosmart series.

The first printer they announced, the A630, which comes with a record setting touch LCD screen, one that measures out at 4.8-inches. In addition, you have the option of making up to 300 edits to the picture, before printing it out. All this editing is done on the printer itself, no need for editing on the computer. In case you don’t need all these features, you can opt to get the simpler and more basic version, the A530. The A530 comes with a smaller screen, but it also is the most affordable printer that still can print 5 x 7 photos.

A cool feature that both these printers come with is Bluetooth capability, which means you can transfer pictures wirelessly through Bluetooth from a camera phone.

The last printer announced by HP is the D5460, which prints both photos and laser quality text documents. Another cool feature is that it prints labels directly onto CD’s and DVD’s.

The D5460 will be available today for $99. The A630 will sell for $149 and the A530 for $99 both will be available in August.

Rumor: Amazon to release the Kindle 2.0 in time for the holiday season

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Recent speculation is calling for Amazon to have an updated Kindle available this fall. According to CrunchGear, an “insider” is calling for not one, but two new models of the popular e-book reader.

The first sounds like it will be an improvement over the current model and is calling for the same size display with an overall smaller form factor. It will also have an improved interface and be available in several color options.

The second model, which is expected to not come until sometime next year, will be a little different from the current form factor. This is going to be larger, more of the size of a standard size piece of paper, in the ballpark of 8.5-inches by 11-inches. This model will also be available in multiple colors.

If this does turn out to be accurate, lets just hope that the Kindle 2.0 will remain in stock. No word yet on any pricing, however the current Kindle retails for $359.

What do get when you cross a gun and an iPhone? iGiveUp

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Seriously, that’s the answer.  Somebody created a Bluetooth earpiece that is shaped like a pistol, and they named it iGiveUp, which is obviously the first thing you say when you see someone pointing it at you.

So, next time you get a call, you can pull out your iGiveUp and pull the trigger to receive it.  (Hopefully your Bluetooth headset is not loaded.) Just ignore the looks of the people around you as they think you are about to commit suicide or a very violent act of aggression.

Hopefully they will calm down once they see you talking into the grip and listening to the barrel.  Maybe they will have a good laugh after their good scare, and take a picture of you.  Maybe that’s how this guy in our photo got his picture taken.  Is it just me, or does this remind me of that one picture of John Hinckley Jr.?

Yes, I don’t think whoever invented this meant to use it for anything except a punchline, especially in a post 9/11 world.  I’ll say if you are dumb enough to bring a gadget like this onto an airplane, you deserve the consequences that will happen afterward.
