Lucid Logix HYDRA tech brings together any GPUs for powerful matrimony

Monday, July 14th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Jul 14th 2008 at 12:54PM
There’s a lot of tech speak to cut through, but if Lucid Logix’s claims are true, we might be looking at a revolution in the high-end gaming segment. Lucid is building a new “real-time distributed processing engine” system on a chip called HYDRA, which can mix and match any GPU from any manufacturer and work with any chipset, and piles it all together for performance scaling that Lucid claims is “near-linear” or “above-linear.” It’s the above-linear part that particularly makes no sense — how can you squeeze more power out of cards than is there to begin with? — but we’re gonna give Lucid the benefit of the doubt for the moment and wait for the benchmarks. HYDRA is slated to come to market in the first half of 2009.

DIY biped robot makes your desk a happier place

Monday, July 14th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jul 14th 2008 at 5:04PM
While some DIY bots understandably creep us out, there’s just as many that bring a smile to our face, and this so-called BiPed robot V-3 from Alex V of Instructables definitely falls into the latter camp. Further adding to our appreciation is the fact that this one is built almost entirely from scratch, right down to the custom made framework cut by a CNC machine. You’d be hard pressed to pick it out from line-up of kit robots, however, with it boasting a full range of movement designed to mimic the human lower body which, as you can see above, even extends to it being able to stand on one leg with ease. Be sure to hit up the link below for a couple of videos and, of course, the instructions for building your own.

Orange’s BIC phone comes ready to talk, doesn’t require ballpoint licking first

Monday, July 14th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 14th 2008 at 10:19AMThe BIC phone has very little to do with famed pen / razor / etc. maker BIC outside of the branding agreement, but we suppose the disposable nature of dried-up writing utensils and this curious cellphone is somewhat similar. Granted, the official word from Orange is that this handset is “not a throw-away product,” but unless users mail off a registration form to the carrier and wait for the phone to be activated, the mobile (and the hour of calls it comes with) will be rendered useless in two months. The selling point here is the unpack-and-talk nature, not to mention the €49 ($77) price, but those hoping to grab a low-cost phone, hack it and use it elsewhere may be heartbroken to find that this one does nothing more than talk, text and tune into FM radio. Check it out soon (if you’re so inclined) in French convenience stores.

Socket Sense Power Strip

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Power strips haven’t exactly aged very well. Power adapters started getting huge and oddly shaped, which meant many outlets in a power strip would wind up being wasted. There have been ways to get around that thanks to the aid of some cool gadgets, but none which seem quite as effective as the Socket Sense.

Beautifully designed and well-thought out, the Socket Sense power strip ensures that every bulky AC adapter and plug has a spot to fit. Each of the sockets are positioned at a 45-degree angle, as to make sure that even the bulkiest adaptors stick to their own spot, not covering any of the other outlets.

The Socket Sense also includes an expanding length so that you can house as much bulk as needed without each plug interfering with one another. The lateral movement over an extending base, in addition to the angled outlets work together to provide one awesome power strip gadget.

The Socket Sense can be yours for $30. There’s no need to keep swapping plugs whenever you need to use a different gadget. The Socket Sense will make sure all of your gadgets are running full speed ahead, even if they have bulky boxed frames.

Powerlink 3-in-1 Battery Pack/Data Sync/Flash Drive

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Powerlink has rolled out a 3-in-1 Battery Pack/Data Sync/Flash Drive that seems to be able to do just about anything. First off, we have an “emergency” charger that comes in pretty handy these days considering the huge amount of gizmos we tote around. In addition, it doubles up as a 2GB USB flash drive, perfect for you to carry even more personal files with you wherever you go (just like USB ports, you can never have enough memory in your possession). Too bad it doesn’t clean your home for you, as this wonder unit will retail for $49.99 a pop.

Hello Kitty anti-virus software

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Oh, why the heck not?

Hello Kitty, entrepreneurial feline that she is, has already slapped her face, stamped her paw, and dipped her tail into every other product in the world. It was really only a matter of time before she went to computer medical school and emerged, stethoscope in tow, with her degree in anti-viral studies.

The anti-virus software is only available in China at the moment, but that doesn’t sadden me at all. Hello Kitty is a fictional kitten, for heaven’s sake! What’s she going to do, apply bow-bedecked bandages to my laptop’s boo-boos?
