Halo 6-in-1 Projection Alarm Clock

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I know when most people say “Halo”, what springs to mind is that fragging-cool game for the Xbox. In this case, I am referring to the Halo 6-in-1 Projection Alarm Clock Flashlight that even Master Chief himself would be comfortable with.

The six functions of the Halo are the projection alarm clock, flashlight, clock, timer, calendar, as well as a built-in compass. The projection alarm clock, which means you can shine your wake-up time right on the wall. Apparently, you can also shine a regular white light, as the device has a flashlight function.

I believe that the many multifunctional uses of the Halo makes it an ideal companion device for campers. True, campers may not need or even want an alarm, but they would certainly be in need of a Compass. They might also enjoy the Timer for cooking food on the fire. Of course, if a camper was really roughing it, they might forget about using the Calendar and Clock.

The Halo 6-in-1 Projection Alarm Clock is designed to fit in your hand, and runs on three 1.5 volt batteries. It is available at the Vavolo site, for an unbelievable price of $3.99. You can also get a good deal if you buy it in conjunction with one of their other devices.

The iPhone 3G is Coming: Pre-Order Now Available

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Are you counting the clock ’til you can get it? What’s “it” you ask? Why, what else but the Apple iPhone 3G that’s coming out in the UK through O2.

Pre-orders have been available since yesterday and consumers have reportedly been flocking to the available online portals where they could sign up such that O2’s servers went down. The Apple iphone 3G were available for pre-order directly from O2 and from Carphone Warehouse. I say “were” because not surprisingly, the demand was so large the units allocated for online orders ran out. Both online portals are displaying banners saying “Due to huge demand for the iPhone 3G, we’re currently out of stock online.” However, said web sites promise more information come June 10. So if you’re interested in the second-gen iPhone, I suggest you get ready to stand in line as soon as July 11 rolls in.

Canon USA has officially announced its next generation entry level digital SLR camera, the EOS Rebel XS which officially replaces the EOS Rebel XT. Like we told you not so long ago, the Rebel XS offers up a cheaper alternative to the previously announced Rebel XSi.

Aside from features that we mentioned before such as a 10.1-megapixel image sensor, 2.5-inch LCD, 7-point autofocus system, 81% viewfinder coverage, 12-bit image processing, spot metering and remote control functionality, the Rebel XS also boasts of a 3.0 frames per second continuous JPEG burst rate which will only be limited by the capacity of the flash memory card in the camera. Weighing only 450 grams, the Rebel XS is by far the lightest EOS digital camera that will come out in the market.

And now for the most important information, Canon has announced that the EOS Rebel XS will have a retail price of $699.99. The Rebel XS camera body would come with the standard EF-S18-55m kit lens and is expected to hit the US market sometime in August.

Washing Machine Doubles as Cozy Seat

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I’d like to take a moment to be grateful for modern day inventions like the washing machine. In the old days, Laundry Day was a grueling chore of hand and washboard scrubbing. Now we just sit on our butts and let the machines do most of the work.

I guess it’s just a natural evolutionary progress that someone made a washing machine that we can actually sit on. This concept device of washing machine/cozy chair is designed by Harsha Vardhan. Since no water is required to run this device, you don’t have to devote a “laundry room” to this washing machine seat.

You heard me right the first time, no water is required, and the same goes for detergent. The inner chamber works like a pressure washer and uses ionized air, which also means that you won’t have to have a matching seat for a dryer.

The whole thing can open up, and the clothes get thrown in. The controls are some kind of slide-out mechanism. I can only assume that the interface is some sort of digital job, and that the user won’t have to fiddle with any dials or big buttons.

This device is a must for any bachelor. Just pick up all the dirty clothes off the floor, put them in the seat, and relax as you wash.

Review: capCAP Bottle Cap replacement

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I recently had a chance to test out what I like to call a batteries-not-needed gadget called the capCAP. It’s essentially a replacement for the many wide-mouth plastic bottles out there. Why would you need one of these when those bottles already come with cap? Pretty easy - replace the awkwardly large openings with a cap that is smaller, easier to pour, and drink out of.

Before I started using it, I didn’t think I would really need it, but once I started using it, I was hooked. I have a large Nalgene bottle that I like to fill up with water whenever I go play soccer/volleyball/whatever, and I immediately found that unscrewing the smaller cap and drinking out of it was a much better experience than the standard cap.

The upside is that you still have access to the wide-mouth bottle for stuffing your bottle full of ice, fruit, what-have-you, quick-filling and cleaning via the lower wide-mouth cap (that the smaller cap screws onto). What I thought was most interesting in this was how many different bottles actually have the same cap form-factor and accept the capCAP as a replacement. capCAP works with Nalgene 1L, Nalgene OTC, CamelBaks, Cyclones, Stansport and more.

The capCAP is a BPA- and polycarbonate-free (2 common chemicals used in plastics that have been found in various studies to be toxic), and instead made of polypropelene #5 which is blessed by the FDA. The capCAP is the first product made by a small startup called humangear. I’m curious to see what they produce next. Meantime, I’ve ripped off the cap off my Nalgene bottle and am a capCAP user now!

There’s nerd and then there’s Commodore 64 nerd. Bring them together in a Commodore 64 LAN party and you’ve got a nerdstorm of mythical proportions. The world’s first Commordore 64 LAN party was held in nerdistan Cincinnati last weekend. It consisted of eight C64s with Ethernet cartridges playing NetRacer off a central, Java-based server. So Geeksta it hurts.
