Verizon’s leaked release schedule for 2008

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Earlier today we saw what AT&T has in store for use device-wise for the remainder of 2008 and now it is Verizon’s turn, and it looks just as exciting as the AT&T lineup.

Beginning in August, it looks like we can expect to see the UTStarcom TXT8010. Also coming in August is the Nokia 2605 Mirage and the Samsung SCH-U440 which are both expected to be released on the 8th, then the Motorola VU30 is expected in mid-August and the Samsung SCH-U430 is expected in late-August.

Moving on from there we also have the Samsung SCH-U310, Nokia 7205 Intrigue and Palm Treo 800w. Finally we also have the Motorola Blaze ZN4, which has no specific date, however it is expected sometime before September 22.

Also anticipated is the UTStarcom Touch Diamond and the UTStarcom Touch Raphael, which are the CDMA versions of the already released Diamond and Touch Pro.

As expected with any leaked or rumored release lineup, most of the dates are still missing as is any pricing information. As always we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

Fresno United School District to receive 7,000 HP Mini-Notes

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

HP has announced that they will begin deploying more than 7,000 HP Mini-Note PC’s to K-12 students in the Fresno United School District in California.

“The HP Mini-Note is a powerful laptop that is small enough to fit on students’ desks along with their textbooks and papers, allowing them access to the Internet and educational content from around the world without leaving their seats,” said Kurt Madden, chief technology officer, Fresno United School District.

Certainly a nice perk for students in that district, it seems like they will be given regular access to the computer, which should in turn make them a little more computer literate, especially at the younger ages, but also be able to be used as a tool to aid in their education.

No information was given on what OS these Mini-Notes will be running, or just how they are being spec’d out. I would imagine that the school district would have them running Windows, but if you remember the Mini-Note offers an option to have either Linux or Windows installed.

Hopefully we will see some additional announcements coming from HP.

Digital Talking Compass

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I know that most of us have already made the jump towards GPS navigation systems, but there are bound to be folks who have not yet taken that next step. Enter the Digital Talking Compass, a precursor to all things GPS.

This digital compass mounts on your dashboard to help get you where you want to go! A clear human voice gives accurate headings. The large, easy-to-read, backlit display also gives the time, date, and temperature. Plus, it’s an alarm clock and chronograph. Mounting tape included. Uses 3 AA batteries (not included).

The Digital Talking Compass drives home its point for $24.99.

The USB Piggy Speakers are anything but dull

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Remember those pig earbuds only being sold in Japan? Well now we have our own pig themed speakers and they can’t have them. Although, likely they probably have their own and got them before us. In my head though, it’s that we get them all to ourselves. These little speakers are of course in true piggy form and are powered by USB. It’s an individual speaker, the type you tote around with you to plug in your ipod at random locations.

If pretty pink pigs aren’t your thing, they also have a black as well as a white one. All three have cute little silver spots to top it off. Since they are just cheap USB speakers they won’t be good for any audiophiles. However, if you’re just looking for some cute novelty accessories these are great for that. For one of these little guys it will only cost you $14. Which is actually only all of $2 more than the pig earbuds and with these you can share your pig themed tunes with all those around. Although, I’m not aware of any actual songs that are pig themed, so good luck with that.

AT&T’s 2008 device roadmap leaked

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Aside from the obvious upcoming release of the iphone 3G, it looks like AT&T customers will have a good remainder of the year device wise. Based on a recently leaked 2008 roadmap there is a nice selection of phones that will soon be available.

It looks like the upcoming 3rd quarter is going to be dedicated to the BlackBerry with an anticipated release of the Curve 8320 with Wi-Fi and the Bold. In addition it looks like the updated blackberry OS will also be released during Q3, which will put the 8820, Pearl 8120, Curve and Curve 8310 up to version 4.5.

Then for those who are not quite as excited by the BlackBerry, it looks like Q4 will be the time for you, of course its almost like a flip with the 4th quarter focusing a little more on Windows Mobile 6.1 goodness. Expected to be released is the Pantech Duo, Samsung Blackjack 3, AT&T Tilt 2 and also a still unknown handset from Samsung. Of course that unknown handset is rumored to be the Samsung Omnia. The four handsets that are on track for the fourth quarter release are all going to be running Windows Mobile 6.1.

In addition to the new WM 6.1 handsets AT&T also has a few current devices that are scheduled to be upgraded to 6.1 as well. It looks like the Samsung Blackjack 2, AT&T Tilt and the Moto Q9H will be updated in July with the old Pantech getting updated in October.

Sounds like a good rest of the year is to be expected for both BlackBerry and Windows Mobile 6.1 fans alike, as you would expect we will keep you up to date as more information becomes available.

Eee Monitor gets detailed; it now looks more like the iMac

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The Asus Eee Monitor which we told you about not so long ago is short of getting official with the leaked official photos more than confirming that it might indeed be the poor man’s iMac. From what we can deduced from the photos, the Eee monitor looks to be a hybrid of Apple’s Cinema Displays and an aluminum colored iMac. But unlike those two machines, the Eee Monitor sports 6 USB ports mounted on its side plus a card reader and Denon-made stereo speaker system on its front.

Additionally, the Eee Monitor would also have dual Ethernet jacks and both audio inputs and outputs, a built-in webcam, an integrated TV tuner and it should come in either 19- or 20-inch widescreen LCD models.

Other details that we know of this monitor are its 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and Linux OS. Estimated retail price of this monitor is predicted to be at around $500. Like we told you before, the Eee monitor will most likely ship sometime in September which is also the estimated release date of another Asus product, the Eee PC 904.

Shoot Some Fireworks With Your Digital Camera

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Filed in archive Tutorial by jim on July 02, 2008

<!– –>

Taking pictures of fireworks displays with film cameras was a tricky assignment and something greatly misunderstood by many amateurs.

One would have thought that fast film and long telephoto lenses would do the trick, when actually the opposite is true, unless the display was a long distance off. Fireworks photos come out best when you're up close and use short focal lengths, no more than 75mm equivalent, in my opinion.

Of course with digital cameras most of the guesswork is taken out of the equation; especially if your camera has a "fireworks" setting or program.

Check out these useful tips for taking great photos of great digital camera photos of fireworks.
