Fujitsu T5010: New Tablet PC

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Fujitsu has recently presented its latest laptop - T5010 - which is going to replace the old T4220. In terms of specifications and price it is well worth it, so check out the details.

Sporting an Intel processor, more specifically the Centrino 2 vPro Chip, and 2GB on the RAM memory, the small-sized screen laptop will cost approximately 1,000 and has a release date set for August, at least on the US, so maybe we will have to wait a bit more here in Europe.

Also known as a tablet pc, the T5010 features a 13.3-inch WXGA screen with a maximum resolution of 1280×800. The goodies that are included in the package are the usual bluetooth + wireless connection, a webcam, and a fingerprint reader that will work as a security system.

- 120GB hard-disk at 5400rpm
- Dual-layer DVD drive
- Windows XP Professional Tablet Edition

Nextar rolls out “sleek and stylish” T30 PMP

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 17th 2008 at 6:26PM It looks like those that prefer their gadgets to call as little attention to themselves as possible now have yet another new PMP to consider from Nextar, which has just pulled up its new T30 model from OEM-land (from the looks of it, at least). This one packs a 3.5-inch QVGA display (not a touchscreen), along with 4GB of memory, an SD card slot for expansion, a built-in FM radio, and support for all the basic audio formats, although you’ll have to convert videos to AVIs using the included software. If that sounds like it’ll do, you can apparently pick one one of these up now from a whole host of retailers, including Wal-Mart, for a $100 (or less, it seems).

Pioneer KRP-600M 60-Inch Plasma

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Things got interesting here in Europe and America over the last few months with Pioneer introducing the second generation Kuro plasma HDTV lineup which promised 5x deeper black levels, improving on the already impressive Kuro generation. Now things are looking interesting for Japan, as Pioneer have just announced the very large 60-inch Pioneer KRP-600M plasma to it’s new Kuro PDP lineup.

The Pioneer KRP-600M is no ordinary HDTV, and Pioneer say that the KRP-600M is “a product targeted at ‘Audio-Visual fans,’ who are very particular about picture quality,” said Masaaki Nishio. Basically this tells us that Pioneer believe it to be the very best in quality, and from their previous products, we are inclined to believe them.

There are not too many specifications to pass out right now, but we do know that this 60-inch plasma will have a full HD 1080p resolution at a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, and that it looks great and is only 64mm at it’s thickest. Connection wise the Pioneer KRP600M sounds good with HDMI, component, PC VGA and DVI inputs, along with Ethernet, an IR repeater, RS-232C and audio ins and outs.

We expect to see the Pioneer KRP-600M in Japan later this month for about $7,900, and we look forward to seeing it over here sometime soon.

Garmin Nuvifone touched, prodded, abused, initial UI reports are positive

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 17th 2008 at 11:22AM
It’s about time someone got his hands on a working Garmin Nuvifone. The folks at Laptop Magazine were lucky enough to spend some time with a prototype, reporting that the interface was snappy, the screen is nice and big, and the UI appears to be very GPS-centric. They tried the QWERTY keypad which is “spacious enough” and uses an auto-complete dictionary. The main interface presents a row of icons for calling, searching, and mapping, and finger swipes stream them across the screen. Included apps, at least in this model, were SMS, Google Search, email, and media player. All said, some apps didn’t load properly and some of the display units were frozen in bug limbo, but we’ll give Garmin a pass there as these were clearly early test units. So a couple questions remain: Is it still coming out Q3 of this year, and will it still run $499? Is it coming in white? Follow the read link for more impressions and hands-on pictures.

Nokia XpressMusic 5800 “Tube” turns up in German poster

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 17th 2008 at 4:24PM Nokia’s 5800 “Tube” handset hasn’t exactly been doing the best job staying under cover, and it’s now turned up yet again to offer another sign of its presumably imminent launch, this time in a poster for Germany’s SMS Shop. Somewhat curiously, the touchscreen-based device (S60, specifically) is now apparently branded with the XpressMusic moniker, rather than XpressMedia, although your guess is as good as ours as to what that might indicate. Otherwise, the only tidbits the poster has to offer is that the device does in fact boast WLAN and HSDPA capabilities, although given that all the other phones in the poster have been officially announced, it seems safe to bet that we should be hearing more about the 5800 straight from Nokia sooner rather than later.

Beacon Power hopes to juggle electricity more efficiently

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 17th 2008 at 8:47AM
Bay State startup Beacon Power isn’t just another wind / solar / hydroelectric outfit. Oh no, this firm is more concerned with reducing the emissions from the energy plants we already have in place. Put simply, the company’s 2,800-pound flywheels are used to store and output energy when needed, a service Beacon’s CEO is dubbing “frequency regulation.” Essentially, said devices will “match power supply to the grid with power demand from the grid,” which curbs energy waste and keeps loads in perfect balance. As it stands, the only disclosed expansion plans include more of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, but if it can rope in enough customers, we reckon the sky’s the limit. Video after the jump.

European Commission approves Nokia’s acquisition of Trolltech

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 17th 2008 at 9:25AM
Not like we were really suspecting any issues or anything, but the European Commission has just made public its “unconditional approval” of Nokia’s “voluntary tender offer for all the shares in Trolltech ASA.” In other words, Nokia’s acquisition of Trolltech is officially complete, with today being the final day in which the latter company is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Such a cute couple, don’t you think?

Tomy Hi-Kara karaoke cube is world’s smallest

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted Jun 17th 2008 at 12:59PM
Sometimes it’s best to not ask why. In the case of the Tomy Hi-Kara, which they claim is the world’s smallest karaoke machine (unless others have something to say about it), we will simply list off some specifications and dimensions then allow you to judge amongst yourselves, because, really, yeah. The Hi-Kara measures just 2.75 x 2.75 x 2.75-inches in a cube format with a 2.4-inch screen that displays lyrics and happy fun animations. You have to download songs onto a proprietary cartridge from the Hi-Kara website. Finally, a headset / microphone serves microphone and listening duties for up to two people. It comes in white and pink. There you have it. We’ll be over here.
