We don’t have much to go by, but the image above image might just be the Nikon D90, successor to the well-received D80 — and according to Nikon Rumors, it might be due as early as tomorrow. We’ll let you know.

Sure, Borrow My Pen, But I Bet You’ll Give It Back

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I’ve had it up to here (insert imaginary height chart here) with people stealing my pens! I gave it to you for three seconds, not your entire lifetime. I’m especially sick of having to high-tail it to my nearest office supply store (since Coolest gadgets doesn’t have a supply cabinet to steal from) just so I can buy a new pack of pens which will eventually be stolen.

Well, not anymore! I’m taking a stand against all of you pen hoarders. I mean, really, where do all of these pens wind up? Is there some crazy pen collector who has piles of writing utensils? Don’t get me wrong. I love pens. I used to be quite the pen connoisseur. That was until I had my Dr. Grip stolen from me one too many times. Now? I just get these “Borrow My Pen?” writing tools. Pen thievery doesn’t happen nearly as much anymore.

Each pen in the “Borrow My Pen?” set includes a brash or politically incorrect statement which makes the pen less desirable than your typical Bic. Who really wants to be known as the guy who stole the “Stuffed with Love Taxidermy, No Pet Too Small, Give Us a Call” pen? Not I. Not I, indeed.

If you’re as fed up with pen thieves as I am, you can grab your own set of “Borrow My Pen?” pens from perpetualkid for $6.99 a pop. And if you don’t have thievery issues, at least it would be a fun prank to pull on a waiter after signing your receipt, or even at the DMV. Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about! Lord knows they could use some humor in their life.

ESPN Ultimate Remote is now shipping, inexplicable packaging comes free

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Jun 15th 2008 at 4:50AM
Just in time for Father’s Day, ESPN’s tvCompass-built WiFi Ultimate Remote is finally available, and rapidly making its way into the awaiting, Cheeto-stained fingertips of a couch potato near you. It still costs $300, and with a good number of laptops retailing for that price these days, it’s certainly hard to justify, but forget all that… who on earth thought this packaging was a good idea? It kind of looks like a dumbell, but not. We’re really at a loss for words here. It’s almost like ESPN wants to fail.

Otokinoko Binaural Mic creeps us out in stereo

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted Jun 15th 2008 at 10:10AM
Look, we get what they’re trying to do here. The two “ears” are meant to capture sound in stereo in the same way a human does, therefore producing a better sound picture in playback. The only problem is that your subject, be they human, inanimate or a strange hybrid, is going to be so busy being freaked out by this set of blue ears that they’ll forget to make any sort of “natural sounding” noise. Oh, and there’s the little problem of the price: the Binaural Recording Mic from Otokinoko retails for $3,900 — quite a bit to spend on a blue gimmick. We want.

Developers and Consumers Get Ready for Apple’s iPhone App Store

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

A massive new online business is scheduled to launch on July 11: Apple’s App Store - an online hub for third party iPhone and ipod Touch applications.

Beginning later this month, developers will begin to upload apps to the store accessible by iPhone users or to a new section of the iTunes Store, sharing revenue from app sales with Apple in a 70/30 split. These apps will be in addition to the 1,700-odd apps already developed for the iPhone’s Safari web browser.

One of the games people are looking forward to playing is Super Money Ball. Sega’s Ethan Einhorn showed off Super Monkey Ball on stage at the WWDC. According to Einhorn, after 8 weeks of development, the developers have created 110 stages.

The new 3G, GPS-enabled iPhone should open up a world of possibilities for clever developers in the realms of gaming, entertainment and enterprise applications.

In related news, the AOL Radio app for the iPhone won for Best Entertainment Application at the 2008 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), providing users free access to over 350 online radio stations (including 150 local CBS radio stations) and more than 200 AOL Radio channels.

Other WWDC iphone App winners:

Best iPhone Game:
Enigmo by Pangea Software

Best iPhone Social Networking App:
Twitterrific by the Icon Factory

Best iPhone Productivity App:
OmniFocus by the Omni Group

Best iPhone Healthcare & Fitness App:
MIM from MIMVista

Dell’s latest laptop models - to compete with Eee and Macbook Air

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Dell is on track to deliver 2 new notebooks, one a 8.9″ dubbed the “E” (the Asus Eee challenger), and a 12.1″ super thin one called the “E slim” (the macbook air competitor). The E is between .8″ and 1.2″ thick, weighing only 2.2lbs, and will come with either Win XP or Linux, WiFi, Bluetooth, WiMax!, will run for potentially 5 hrs, but you’ll be limited in the hard drive department (up to 16GB Flash drive).

The E Slim on the other hand is a 12.1″ WXGA machine that doesn’t even break an inch in thickness, and weighs in at 2.6lbs. You can get this outfitted with an SSD drive (up to 8GB) or go with a traditional 40GB. There’s an option to get a 6-cell battery that may last up to 9 hrs (must see to believe).

Starting at $299, and available in quite a selection of colors, expect to see these showing up in the Aug-Sep timeframe, with a 2nd generation showing up in Q2 2009. I’m highly tempted to snag one of these when they arrive, particularly because they will run Linux as well, but I’m a bit wary of the 1GB memory on the E. We’ll see how they test out in the real world.

Engadget has the Dell slides posted for your perusal.
