EFiX wants to bring OSX86 to the masses

Friday, June 13th, 2008

by Joshua Topolsky, posted Jun 13th 2008 at 7:57PM
Word in the OSX86 world is that a new product will revolutionize (and simplify) the process of installing OS X on a PC — and that product is called the EFiX. The USB dongle allegedly pops into a free port and allows you to install the retail version of the Mac operating system on just about any system by automatically locating the proper hacks and drivers needed. Famed OSX86 hacker Netkas has demoed a beta unit on video (which you can see after the break) and claims that it’s working as it should. The manufacturer is aiming to have models available for purchase by June 23rd… barring any more “sabotage.” This sounds like a much more reasonable solution than marketing a Mac clone — feel free to send one our way whenever you like guys.

Cable provider Charter Communications to spy on you, deliver relevant ads

Friday, June 13th, 2008

I just got a notice from my cable provider, Charter Communications, that they may start to “deliver or facilitate delivery of advertisements about goods and services that may be of interest” to me.  Apparently, they’re not too concerned about their customers’ rights, and are doing this as an opt-out service.  It’s one thing to spy for national security reasons, it’s another thing to spy on innocent people just to deliver ads.

From their website:

Targeted Marketing

Charter may partner with a third-party advertising company who may utilize cookies or web beacons to deliver or facilitate delivery of advertisements about goods and services that may be of interest to You. This partner will not have access to or use Your name, address, e-mail address, telephone number or other personally identifiable information; it may, however, anonymously track Your Web usage and collect what is known as “Click Stream Data.” Click Stream Data is anonymous, and may include information such as a web surfer’s IP address, web pages which have been viewed by a web surfer, date and time, domain type, and responses by a web surfer to an advertisement delivered by us or a third party advertising technology vendor. We, and/or the third party advertising technology vendor, may use different types of technologies to collect this type of information, including cookies and web beacons (1×1 pixels).

Opting-Out of Targeted Marketing:

You can request an “opt-out cookie” at http://www.charter.com/onlineprivacy, which is an identification tag that will prevent your anonymous data from being matched to any particular machine. Please note that this opt-out process will erase the cookie ID but not the cookie. It’s necessary for us to store this “opt-out” cookie on your computer in order to recognize you as an opt-out user. This is the only way Charter and our third party advertising partner can know you’ve chosen to take this action and ensure that your decision is recognized by our servers. Please note that if you ever clean out cookies from your internal drive you will need to visit http://www.charter.com/onlineprivacy site again and repeat this quick procedure. Also, please be aware that any time you change computers, have different browsers, have different computers, update your Internet browser or delete your cookie(s), you must repeat this opt-out process.

Does anybody else have a problem with this?

Robo-Pong

Friday, June 13th, 2008

We have reported about some advancements in Pong before, so I figured we should also report about advancements in ping-pong. Okay, that was a weak introduction, but I believe that Robo-Pong 2040 is the best thing to happen to ping-pong since the paddle.

Robo-Pong could easily play the main villain in a Balls of Fury sequel in the ultimate battle of man vs. machine. Robo-Pong wields a gun that fires ping pong balls at its human opponent at varying speeds, and can even do fast chops and shallow spikes. With a top serving speed of 75 miles per hour, Robo-Pong would give Forrest Gump a run for his money. “That’s all I got to say about that.”

Unlike the automatic servers that tennis players use, the Robo-Pong won’t be running out of balls anytime soon. Once the player hits the balls back, they are collected in a net and put back into the shooter.

You can purchase the Robo-Pong off the official site or by calling 877-55-ROBOT. It costs about $700, but you can set up an easy payment plan.

I have included this video below so you can see it in action. Listen closely to the narration, as it makes it sound like you will finally be able to face an opponent as tough and soulless as the Terminator.

Noon Solar gets a new solar powered bag

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Anyone on the lookout for a solar bag should really keep an eye on Noon Solar, they are one of my favorite brands when it comes to bags with solar panels.  They have recently created yet another bag to add to their line.  If you’re unfamiliar with the company, they do create bags for both men and women.  A lot of their bags are kind of a handbag style, but they do have a couple unisex products as well.  The bags are all featuring sustainable products and some of them come with an odd little locket.  That locket is filled with dirt, to remind that the bag came from the earth and can be easily returned to it.

I have wanted one of their bags since I came across the line about a year ago and since I tend to stalk their site.  I haven’t snagged one of their bags yet, purely because solar bags aren’t quite cheap.  A lot seem to think solar bags are best for those that are in the car a lot to go to work.  However, if you have a window nearby your desk at work you could easily pop the bag in that.  The Willow case which isn’t new exactly, has gotten a new look to it.  It now comes in the soft brown seen here, whereas it used to just be sold in a light gray.  Currently, it is sold out, which means they won’t show me the price, unfortunately.  To give you an idea though the Logan satchel which is their unisex bag, is being sold for $452.

Alltel offers up firmware update for the Palm Treo 755p

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Palm has released a new, albeit small firmware update for Alltel Treo 755p users. The new update brings the firmware from version 1.02 to 1.03, which will be reflected as software version “Treo755p-1.03-CDMA” on your phone’s info screen. The update does not offer anything overly exciting, but is still recommended as it does correct a “reset issue that occurs under certain specific and rare conditions.” As always when updating your device, please take some proper precautions and make sure you are backed up first, and of course follow the directions offered from Palm closely.
