QNAP adds new BitTorrent engine to NAS family, launches TS-409U

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 5th 2008 at 10:14AM
We’re still struggling to see if this is just a PR push or if QNAP is really introducing something new here, but whatever the case, it’s using Computex to announce a “new” P2P download engine in cooperation with BitTorrent. Said engine will be embedded within its TS-109 II, TS-209 II, and TS-409, and it should enhance download performance as well as add support for DHT / TCP / UDP tracker protocols. Beyond all that, the firm is kicking out an all new Turbo NAS: the 1U rack-mountable US-409U. The unit is based on a Linux-embedded system and includes a 500MHz SoC CPU, 512MB of DDR2 RAM, four hot-swappable bays, online RAID capacity expansion and RAID 0/1/5/6/5+spare disk redundancy support. Regrettably, QNAP didn’t pass along any information in regard to pricing / availability.

Audi Q5 to boast NVIDIA-powered interface, gadgets aplenty

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted Jun 5th 2008 at 4:36PM
Audi is certainly no stranger to cramming some less-than-common technology into its vehicles, and it looks like its new Q5 compact crossover vehicle is no exception, with it set to roll out of the factory later this year with some NVIDIA-powered graphics. That comes in the form of the vehicle’s Harman/Becker-designed MMI (Multi-Media Interface) “3G infotainment system,” which relies on an unspecified NVIDIA graphics processor to provide smooth map transitions, along with photorealistic depictions of points of interest and other eye candy. As if that wasn’t enough, the vehicle’s in-dash system will also boast support for external USB storage media, built-in Bluetooth, satellite radio, and even a SIM card slot that’ll effectively turn it into a quad-band GSM cellphone.

The Speak-er speaker

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

These humorous little speakers use little chat bubbles to emit sound.  Making the design seem much more witty and chic than my normal computer speakers.  All they do is sit there, they don’t even look cool.  I’m going to have to hang my head in shame now.  All these novelty speakers are making me look entirely too normal.  My keyboard glows though, that’s cool right?  Three different colors too, I don’t need interesting speakers.  No, I have a glowing keyboard.

Alright fine, these speakers are much cooler than even my glowing keyboard.  They probably would be more expensive too if it weren’t for the fact that they are still a concept design.  It was designed by designer Sherwood Forlee, who I will have thank later for making all of my gadgets look dull.  These would look especially sleek sitting on either side of a Mac monitor.  Especially with the white lining on the outside.  Then again snazzy speakers such of these would look great with even the most sad of computers.  Hopefully this little concept design will eventually get put onto the shelves at some point.

TomTom / Tele Atlas a done deal, Nokia / NAVTEQ moving in that direction

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Jun 5th 2008 at 9:26AM
Coincidence is a funny beast, is it not? On the very same day, releases have been put out touching on both of the major navigation deals that have long since been pending. To kick things off, we’ve got TomTom and Tele Atlas in quite the celebratory mood, as TomTom intends for Tele Atlas’ listing on Euronext Amsterdam and on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange “to be terminated as soon as legally possible.” Can’t blame a brother for wanting what’s his, right? Moving on, we’re hearing that Nokia will receive clearance from EU regulators “to buy digital map supplier NAVTEQ, as no formal charges are to be levied against the deal.” It’s also noted that the time for sending a statement of objections has passed, so from the outside looking in, it seems the two can at least move forward with their plans.

Jawbone to turn heads in the UK

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Guaranteed to turn heads on the streets of London, the San Francisco based Aliph recently announced that the Jawbone headset will now be available in the UK through a partnership with The Carphone Warehouse.

The new Jawbone Bluetooth headset is said to be 50% smaller than its earlier incarnation and boasts of cutting-edge technology in noise elimination.  In essence, beauty and utility are married in this stylish accessory. The new Jawbone brags about its “military-grade NoiseAssassin” technology, which zeroes in on your voice and eliminates all other ambient noise to ensure crisp and clear sound even if you’re in a busy street. NoiseAssassin, as the manufacturer says, was originally developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in its goal to have reliable communications even in battlefield situations.

With models such as “Goldy Lips”, “Blah Blah Black”, and “Silver Tongue”, the new Jawbone is incredibly fashionable. Measuring only 508mm long by 1.27mm wide by 1.27mm thick and weighing a measly 10 grams, grabbing the new Jawbone will be no problem as you strut down the street.
