Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 Review - CNET Australia

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

CNET Australia reviews the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and writes, “We’ve been talking iPhone killers for the last 18 months, crossing less impressive phones off our lists as each came and went without making a dent on the Australian mobile landscape. Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 stands a chance to change all of that; forget a dent on the landscape, the X1 looks set to leave a meteoric crater. If the X1 can live up to the hype we’ll be asking if the next generation of iphone is the X1 killer.”

Universal Battery from APC charges laptops and USB devices

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

If you’ve ever gone to purchase a universal battery for your laptop, you know that it can be a pain making sure that you get the voltage correct. Sure, you could just guess, but if you get it wrong, your entire laptop could go kaput. This new external battery from APC takes all of the guesswork out of it.

These new batteries come in 70-watt and 90-watt versions and will automatically detect the correct voltage before sending any juice to your laptop. As a bonus, it features two USB ports for charging things like phones and iPods. If you pick up the 90-watt model, you can expect to get around 8 hours of extra life out of your notebook, which makes it well worth the $225 price tag. The smaller version will run you $135.

Hayfever? Try at-home photo therapy thanks to Health Innovations

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

As much fun as constant sneezing and itchy eyes can be, most of us who suffer from hay fever dream of spending an entire summer symptom-free. British company Health Innovations claims they can now make that dream a reality, thanks to a new gadget called Medinose.

Medinose works by using to photo therapy to inhibit the release of histamine. Insert the prongs of the device into your nose for 4-5 minutes, two or three times a day, and you could apparently see a reduction or even elimination of your symptoms. This has to be worth a try: it’s drug-free, simple, and at £79.95 ($158) is a lot less expensive than weekly prescriptions…

Sega Toys DigiPod

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

If you happen to fall under the category of a “Japanese Geek Teen”, then the Sega Toys DigiPod is just the thing for you. It comes with a 1.5″ LCD display housed within a body that measures 78mm x 57mm x 29mm, making it perfect to tote around in your pocket, secretly sharing all your most private photos with a trusted friend, away from the peering eyes of the world. Photos can be transferred using a mini USB connection located at the side of the DigiPod. At $30 a pop, I don’t really see the importance of such a device as most cell phones these days already come with a screen size larger than 1.5″ and do a pretty bang up job displaying photos captured via a high resolution digital camera.

Verizon Wireless rolls out Motorola W755

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I seriously wonder what the folks at Motorola are doing, as releasing phones such as the W755 over Verizon Wireless isn’t going to win them any points with the consumers anytime soon, and it looks as though time is running out for the Big M as they suffer from their own success - the RAZR. It has been a fair number of years since the RAZR hit the market, and since then many variations as well as newer models based on the original design have rolled out, but none of them truly embodied the spirit of the original RAZR, causing Motorola to lose market share to its other rivals while seeing its stock price plummet just like how the greenback is compared to other major currencies around the world. If you don’t think that the W755 won’t be able to save Motorola, why not head on after the jump to read up on its rather mediocre specifications list.

Some of the features and capabilities found on the MOTO W755 include :-

  • Music player for formats AAC, AMR NB, MIDI, MP3 and WMA V9
  • Create and manage playlists with Windows Media Player 11
  • Stereo Bluetooth wireless technology
  • 2.5 mm headset jack (way to go, Motorola *sarcasm*)
  • 1.3 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom (I thought we have moved on to a minimum of 2 megapixels by now)
  • 1.9″ internal display
  • V CAST Video - download or stream video from the best names in news, sports, entertainment and more
  • VZ Navigator-capable - get audible maps, turn-by-turn directions and location information
  • Text, picture and video messaging
  • Mobile IM and chat capabilities
  • Mobile Web-capable - customizable, enhanced wireless access to the latest in news, sports, weather and more
  • Media Center-capable - download games, ringtones, wallpapers and more
  • microSD card memory slot with up to 4 GB support with an optional memory card
  • Phonebook with up to 1,000 contacts

The MOTO W755 handset will retail for $69.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year contract.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 gets more details

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

The buzz and hype over Sony Ericsson’s upcoming XPERIA X1 smartphone continues to build up as Sony Ericsson’s developer site posted an updated white paper about the mobile phone. The white paper is still a long read and might bore you to death so if you don’t have the time to check it out, the paper contained two bits of new and welcomed information.

So now, aside from the details that we already know as well as some pre-order pricing from some wireless carriers, we were also able to learn that the XPERIA would have 256MB of SDRAM and a 1500mAh lithium polymer battery which can give out a good 10 hours of talk time via GSM or 6.5 hours via UMTS.  If you would insist on checking out the white paper, just follow the read link below.

Surprise! Biggest drawing now biggest GPS hoax in the world

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 28th 2008 at 3:10AMWe had a pretty good idea that not only was this whole “Biggest Drawing in the World” business fake, but also impossible. First, we were skeptical that DHL could make deliveries based on coordinate instructions. Then, we determined — with little effort — that the little campaign was a DHL ad. Now we have a straight-up admission from artist Erik Nordenenkar and DHL that entire thing was fictional. Appearing at the bottom of Erik’s site — after the fact and millions of hits — are the following words: “This is fictional work. DHL did not transport the GPS at any time.” Meanwhile, DHL offered that this was an innocent college project and they were happy to let Nordenenkar film in their warehouse, use their name, and make false claims regarding the whole shenanigan. So, there you have it. The videos, briefcase, DHL receipts — all spam. Move along.

Nokia’s N95 8GB for North America gets v20 firmware as well

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

by Paul Miller, posted May 28th 2008 at 12:20AM
It isn’t hard to see to perks to Apple’s “one size fits all” approach to software for the iphone and ipod touch. After making N95-3 (the regular ol’ N95 for North America) users wait months to get the software updates of their European counterparts, it took ‘em another few days to get the N95-4 (the 8GB version for North America) up to snuff as well. Of course, the N95 8GB already had a few of the software improvements, but this seems to pull it in line with the v20 firmware all the cool kids are rocking. Unfortunately it’s not all gravy, you’re going to have to do all the heavy lifting of backing up and re-installing your apps, and we’ve been having trouble getting the update to work at all on our particular 8GB — we’ll let you know how that goes. Still, the speed gains are (probably) worth all the hassle, so fire that sucker up and get updating!

[Via Boy Genius Report]

Update: Problem solved, turned out to be a bum USB port on the PC we were using. You may also run into Vista compatibility issues using Nokia’s Software Update app, though we had no problems when we told Vista to front like XP SP2 using the shortcut. Proceed at your own risk!

ASUS 10-inch Eee PC 1000-series to launch at Computex?

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted May 28th 2008 at 3:54AM
Oh, snap. As if it weren’t official enough already, the subnote war is on. According to a Computex invitation from ASUS, the outfit is planning to not only showcase the Eee PC 901, but also a brand new variant that will likely go mano a mano with the 10-inch MSI Wind. We quote: “[ASUS] would also like to specially extend an invitation to you to attend the official global launch of the new Eee PC 901 and 1000 series.” There’s no details beyond that right there, but it’s plenty to whet our appetites on the heels of the 10.6-inch Eee PC 1001 evidence we’ve already collected. Oh Tuesday, you seem so far away.
