Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 outed for a mid-September release?

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Oh you have to love the leaks, especially when they are giving out the goods on a phone as hot as the XPERIA X1 from Sony Ericsson. We have seen plenty of details come out for the X1, most of the specs have been confirmed and we have even seen some unofficial pricing, however the release remained somewhat of a mystery, that is until now.

The most recent leak comes courtesy of a newsletter from Handango, and they are clearly stating the “Xperia X1 will launch in mid-September 2008,” and in addition the phone will include the Handango InHand service. While the release time-frame is not official as its not coming from Sony Ericsson we can only hope it is true, it does however fit in with the estimate that was previously stated from SE, in that the XPERIA X1 would launch during the second part of 2008.

Two Person Water Lounger

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Say you have a pool in your backyard, and with summer coming round pretty soon it is time to jump in for a dip with that hottie you’ve picked up the night before. Why not make the entire experience more fun with the Two Person Water Lounger?

This is the inflatable 7 1/2′ diam. water lounger that allows two people to relax comfortably head-to-toe, facilitating conversation. It is made of durable 0.3 mm thick PVC that will withstand exuberant play, and has a removable, inflatable cooler located in the center of the craft that holds up to six 12 oz. cans of your preferred beverage and ice. A cup holder built into either side of the hull provides a convenient place for a drink, swim goggles, or sunglasses. Two inflatable, removable pillows snap onto the hull and remove easily. The lounger inflates in minutes using the included manual air pump; deflates quickly and stows unobtrusively for off-season storage.

Just watch your weight though, as this can support a maximum of 350 lbs. The Two Person Water Lounger will retail for $129.95.

QMotion hope to create wireless controller for Xbox 360

Monday, May 5th, 2008

QMotion recently announced that it will be working on a new wireless skateboard-style controller that will be used in Xbox 360 games in the near future. What do you have to say to that? I personally think this is a positive development in the right direction, but the big question is this - will it sell? Even if the answer is in the affirmative, will it sell well at all? After all, QMotion has to recoup the research and development costs in addition to marketing it across worldwide. Hopefully there will be some sort of skateboard game that will be released on the Xbox 360 console which will see sales figures of this wireless controller take off - after all, title-specific hardware rarely sells well unless it is bundled along with the game itself (like Mario Kari Wii’s steering wheel) or is a pre-requisite with a whole lot of followers (Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises).

This new wireless controller from QMotion is the result of the company having entered into an agreement with Microsoft themselves to produce such a controller for the latter’s console. Since it will be a fully endorsed product from Microsoft, that means this controller will feature a full range of movement options that could hopefully be used in other future games that do not involve the skateboarding genre. Dubbed the Big Air, this full-size skateboard controller will function with “popular skateboarding games” and ought to hit the streets sometime in the second half of this year. For those who want to have a better idea of what a skateboard-style controller feels like, check out QMotion’s wired Xboard which is already available in the market.

Guess gaming is getting even more casual than before, and should Microsoft’s foray into the lighter side of gaming be successful, I hope see the Xbox 360 pressure the Nintendo Wii in terms of sales, although the latter has already built up a formidable sales momentum worldwide. After all, it is the consumer who wins in the end with better choices, right?

Nikko’s R2 gets an upgrade to R3

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Last year, we broke the news that Nikko Electronics had created the ultimate home theater bot in the R2D2 Projector DVD player, a plucky well put together droid that not only provides comedy relief, but can help you relive that “help me Obi Wan Kinobi” fantasy. Well, now Nikko announces that R2 has gotten an upgrade …

Controlled by a Millenium Falcon remote (which is quite a handful to operate in an of itself), the new R3-D2 sports the ability to project a screen up to 260 inches wide, features 1800 lumens brightness and an amazing 1800:1 contrast ratio. Users can plug in anything from an ipod to a flash memory card, USB drive, and even a game console for those late night Star Wars Force Unleashed forays online in full HD.

R3 is also completely motorized, so users can watch their favorite Scifi movie from just about anywhere inside or outside of the house. It can even tilt the image up to the ceiling for those late night movie dates in bed. R3 even comes with built-in virtual surround sound but can also broadcast on an FM channel so users can take advantage of the HiFi stereo system they recently bought with their stimilus package refund. The cost is @2,900.00/€2,799.00 but you better hurry as it’s currently only available in Europe and in limited quantities (about 4000).

Death Star plans not included. But you can still check out this awesome video of R3 in action.

Breitling creates a truly waterproof watch

Monday, May 5th, 2008

When I was a kid I loved watches. For years I wanted one that was both waterproof and had a button which would light up the face. I found out later that there weren’t actually all that many situations where a waterproof watch came in handy for me, but it was still cool nonetheless. What I didn’t understand back then is that the watches weren’t really waterproof, because if you attempted to engage the chronograph, water would seep in. If you’re one that is concerned about such an issue, you’ll be happy to hear that watchmaker Breitling has solved this issue.

This Seawolf Chrono achieves true waterproof status by using strategically placed magnets where your button are. When you press one of the buttons, it will activate another magnet on the inside to create the desired response. This prevents water from ever being allowed inside the watch. I still don’t think that I’ll ever have much of a use for something this fancy, but perhaps some of you divers out there would enjoy it.

BlissLights Laser Wand

Monday, May 5th, 2008

I think we all know how much fun a laser pointer can be, but just picture how much fun it would be if you had a device that could make many laser points all at once.

I can only assume this was the idea behind creating the BlissLights Laser Wand. This uses what the company calls a “high diffraction efficiency digital holographic optical element”, which creates a shining starfield effect on any wall. Just think of it as a disco ball without the mirror ball or need of reflected light.

At first I wondered what to do with device, but these pictures to the left gave me some ideas. It certainly would liven up any party for younger people. As the ad says, you can “spin it, twist it, shake it” which makes it something like a kaleidoscope that everyone can see.

Not only will this entertain the young in the dark, but it might be entertaining for adults in the dark as well. I’m not going to go into any detail on that, just use your imagination for that one.

As for power, the BlissLights Laser Wand uses a CR2 battery for about 1,000 hours of usage. The price might be too expensive for peoples’ tastes at about $99.95.

Review: CellPoint’s Flamingo Headphones with EarClick

Monday, May 5th, 2008

You probably just read the title and started wondering what “EarClick” is. I’ll get to that shortly. I had a chance to review the Flamingo Headphones from CellPoint recently and put it through its paces.

The Flamingo is a unique pair of audio headphones that employs a mechanism that CellPoint calls EarClick, which they also use in some of their other products, like their Bluetooth headsets.

EarClick is essentially a rubberized node (see photo) that in combination with the speaker in the headphone snaps or ‘clicks’ securely into your ear. I’ve not seen anything quite like this before and it works like a champ.

As long as you pick the right sized EarPads (and there are plenty to choose from - 6 sizes), these headphones are very comfortable even with a great deal of activity. I tested out the Flamingos quite a few times at the gym for over 30 minutes at a shot (including sessions on the elliptical and treadmill) and never found myself needing to adjust them. I have now found my new favorite pair of headphones for the gym as my other pairs needed constant adjustment for a snug fit that shut out as much of the horrible gym music as possible. Now while the Flamingos won’t do quite as good a job as in-ear headsets like Shure’s EC line, it is still a remarkably good fit.

While the EarClick technology is very cool and in my case, important, these headphones wouldn’t be usable if the sound quality was lacking. It wasn’t. Now these are essentially in-ear headphones, so you’re not going to get quite the bass or even as good a range as a set of over-the-ear cans (my favorite home and air travel pair is the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7). However, I was pleasantly surprised at how good these sounded. It does have a 9mm neodynmium driver, and I didn’t feel the need to mess around with the EQ in my mp3 player or even on my home system.

Overall, I highly recommend the Flamingos, particularly if you’re physically active and like some music while working out.

Cassette MP3 Player

Monday, May 5th, 2008

This is a wacky little gadget. As a standalone device, it’s actually an mp3 player. It has a headphone jack and plays MP3s off of the external SD or MMC memory card (unfortunately you have to supply your own) that you slot into the bottom of it. The other crazy use is that it functions like a regular cassette - just stick it into your home or car’s tape player and away you go.

This is a great little piece of functional retro-art that might date you a little or just make you look cool/weird.

Its built-in battery is charged up via USB and it’s compatible with Win2000/XP.

Gimme!
Price: $39.99
