Sony TG3E: world’s smallest 1080i camcorder unboxed, sized-up with 720p champ

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

by Thomas Ricker, posted May 2nd 2008 at 5:10AM
Get a load of what just arrived at the doorstep of our European HQ — the world’s smallest 1080i camcorder, Sony’s TG3E. Otherwise known as the TG1 in the US, this pup is small and sturdy and definitely looks the part of a Full HD (as it’s defined for camcorders) 1080i shooter. Hell, Sony somehow managed to turn that boxy design into something sexy to hold. However, Sanyo’s 720p Xacti DMX-HD700 (in red) still trumps the TG3E in size and weight. Unfortunately, it gives up significant lines of resolution in the process and uses inferior materials to boot. We’ll be back later with a full review of this pup as soon as we find a nice, tropical island which can pamper this beast in the luxury a $900 camcorder deserves. So until then, check the gallery and call out in the comments with any questions you’d like us to tackle.

T-Mobile activates their 3G, some users rejoice

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

While it is official, T-Mobile has activated their 3G service, but as expected from the rumor train, so far it is limited to just New York City. The good news is that the now faster service appears, based on user reports to be for both voice and data. Some are reporting speeds up to 300Kbps or more, a nice improvement coming from EDGE which is 2G and offers an average of 200Kbps.

T-Mobile has promised that the 3G service would be rolled out by this summer, but is expected to hit other major cities before the full roll-out. Hey at least some of T-Mobile’s users can now take full advantage of these 3G-capable handsets that they have been buying. Here’s hoping for a smooth, and quick roll-out.

BenQ intro’s the not-so-spectacular C36 music phone

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

We don’t expect BenQ to come up with a mobile phone that could match up to industry leaders such as the iphone or blackberry, but if it wants to make its presence felt in the mobile market, it should at least come up with a mobile phone that has something innovative to offer. We’re not saying that BenQ’s newly launched C36 mobile handset has nothing to offer, by all means it has several nifty features. But how we wish it could offer something more.

Anyway, BenQ’s latest mobile handset, the C36 seems to be confused in what it wants to offer to the users. For one, the C36 is touting “a rocking mp3 player” with FM radio that can record on-air programs. It even has dual speakers for letting users share what they are listening to with their friends. Then it brags about a big 2-inch screen which is said to be perfect for viewing photos and video that users can take using the phone’s 1.3-megapixel camera/webcam. It even adds an e-book reader and photo editor to its line up of features as well as a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

If not for the 2.4 hours talk time and 180 hours stand by time listed on its data specifications, we would have mistaken the C36 for a portable media player. Good thing the data sheet also listed the C36 as running on GSM900 and at 1800 MHz. Now those are certainly mobile phone features.

This not-so-spectacular mobile phone from BenQ will be available sometime this month in the Malaysian market before it gets released in other countries in June.

UK crossing guards given new weapon against road rage

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Britain’s lollypop ladies, the equivalent of our school crossing guards here in the US, have just been issued cameras and portable DVRs to record incidents of “lollipop rage” or school zone road rage. The cameras record traffic from both sides and feed their footage to an Archos portable DVR. The system was developed by a British firm known as Routesafe, and several local authorities have already implemented it in their communities.

“It’s unbelievable that we have to take this action,” says the chairman of the Local Government Association’s transport board, “but the lives of children are at risk from increasing numbers of drivers who are so selfish that they are willing to put lives at risk by refusing to stop for 30 seconds at a school crossing.”

Road rage is becoming an increasing problem in the UK. Anyone caught by this new system will be fined £1,000, which equals roughly $2000 US, and also have 3 points placed on their driver’s license.

Researchers design “malicious circuits,” warn of potential risk

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

by Donald Melanson, posted May 1st 2008 at 2:45PMWe’ve already seen a few viruses delivered via hardware, but a group of researchers from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are now warning that we may not have seen anything yet. As New Scientist reports, they’ve apparently managed to develop their own “malicious circuits,” which they say can interfere with a computer at a deeper level than a virus, and completely bypass traditional anti-virus software. To accomplish that slightly unsettling feat, the researchers created a replica of the open source Leon3 processor, and added about 1,000 malicious circuits not present in the original processor. Once they hooked that up to another computer they were apparently not only able to swipe passwords from memory, but install malware that would allow the operating system to be remotely controlled as well. Of course, they admit that sneaking such malicious circuits onto a chip isn’t exactly an easy proposition, given that someone would either need to have access to a chip during its manufacturing process, or have the ability to manufacture their own. Or, as the project’s lead researcher puts it, it’s “not something someone would carry out on weekends.”

Apple iTunes offer films on same day DVD release

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Say what you like about Blu-ray emerging as the victor in next-gen high definition wars, but DVD is still here to stay - at least for a few more years to come. With the credit crunch affecting virtually everyone from top to bottom (even more so in the latter category), not everyone has the disposable income to splurge on a spanking new HDTV. This means DVDs could remain in the market for a few more years longer than expected before HD content takes over. Apple is going to seize the opportunity to release films on their iTunes Store on the same day where said films are released on the DVD format in brick-and-mortar stores after coming to an agreement with a number of major motion picture studios including 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment, and First Look Studios.

These new film releases on iTunes will retail for $14.99 (having two people watch it will mean saving money and hassle of going to the cinema, although you might have to wait a little bit longer), while older titles sell for $9.99. Sounds cheaper than DVDs of recently released films on Amazon that vary in price, ranging from $14.99 to $22.99 with the latter normally reflecting the inclusion of extra discs or supplementary material. This would definitely make the iTunes platform more popular than ever (it currently offers 6 million songs, 600 TV shows, and more than 1,500 films, 200 of which are available in a high-definition format) in my book, although I am sure that audio purists will make noise that downloads might not feature a good sound track since downloaded files are normally compressed (with good audio to go first) in order to make the file smaller.

What’s your take on this? Do you prefer to download your movies or stick to physical media? I’m all for the latter.
