New RFID readers from Alien distinguishes between tags

Monday, April 14th, 2008

by Darren Murph, posted Apr 13th 2008 at 12:26AMFor airlines and cargo handling companies, the inability to know precisely where a specific item was located on a belt could (understandably) prove to be quite the limitation. Thankfully, the gurus at Alien Technology are aiming to add more functionality to a few of its readers in order to nix said quandary. The company recently showcased its Intelligent Tag Radar reader firmware in Las Vegas, which essentially provides its ALR-9900, ALR-9800 and ALR-8800 Enterprise-Class reader platform with the ability to understand “information about the velocity and position of tags, in addition to the contents of tag memory.” Furthermore, the included ITR-Singulation features allows the reader to “easily discriminate amongst adjacent tagged objects on a conveyor such as items, cases or airline baggage.” One less excuse for lost luggage? Where do we sign?

Disposable phones to hit Europe, rest of world soon

Monday, April 14th, 2008

CTIA 2008 seemed to be a pretty good one, and perhaps almost all companies can say that they geniunely benefited from the event. Take the little-known Hop-On Inc., for example. While other folks were busy churning out the next iphone killers elsewhere in CTIA, this little company introduced a concept for disposable cellphones, which will cost you only 13 euros, or about $20 US a piece. The phone uses a chip from Texas Instruments, and will work on the 900/1800 MHz frequencies. What this means for us is that the dawn of cheap, disposable phones is upon us, and we can all look forward to easy mobile telephony, whenever and wherever we are in the world (if ever this becomes available globally). I just hope they could at least include a screen and a game on these things—$20 USD should at least warrant that I’ll have some fun, right?
