Video: Lenovo’s Ideapad U8 interface scrolls like butter, looks like candy

Although officially unveiled at Intel’s IDF forum last week, the UI of Lenovo’s Ideapad U8 MID has remained a bit of a mystery. Oh sure, we saw the teaser video. However, that vid was all flash based animation. Now we’ve got the real goods thanks to the folks at PCHome.net. That ain’t Windows kids, the U8 features a sexy Lenovo-grown UI which has us asking when we can get our hands on it outside of China… and for how much? Unfortunately, you’ll notice some serious lag between finger touch and application launch in the video posted after the break. We’ll attribute that to what we presume is a prototype device — certainly it can’t be the fault of Intel’s highly touted new Atom processor could it?

P.S. Anyone speak the native tongue found in the video? We distinctly heard “SSD,” “WiMax,” and “SIM card” mentioned, all of which would be new details.

Update: Helpful readers Riceman and rdy0329 provided us with the following snap translations: definitely a prototype, will not include WiMax but will support China’s 3G TD-SCDMA standard for voice and data, will ship in 4, 6, and 10GB SSD options.

MobiBLU launches the Cube3 towards Earth

Filed under: Portable AudioYou’d think that after three whole versions of the MobilBLU Cube, the company could get itself off of .mac and onto a real server — but you’d be wrong. Regardless, the Borg-ship-aping media player is back, this time sporting a whopping 2GB of storage (just enough for those 14 LPs you own). Of course, you can’t beat its support for MP3 and WMA files, compatibility with PlaysForSure content, FM tuner, and shiny, happy OLED display… or can you? We’re not completely sure, but if you want to get to the bottom of this mystery, grab one on May 1st for $99.

HP Mini-Note 2133 officially official, reviewed

It’s a full 24 hours after we expected it, but with looks this hot we’re not surprised the HP Mini-Note 2133 is fashionably late. Specs are exactly what we’d heard and what was up on Amazon earlier: 2.6 pounds, Via C7-M processor, 1280×768 8.9-inch screen, full QWERTY keyboard that’s just 8 percent smaller than normal, and a variety of configurations ranging from a $499 1.0GHz Linux-powered unit with 4GB of flash and 512MB of RAM to a maxed-out $749 config with a 1.6GHz processor, 120GB drive and Vista Business. Laptop managed to score some hands-on time, and from the video it looks like this thing might actually be as popular as HP is predicting — except for those crazy side-mounted vertical mouse buttons, which are totally messing with our heads. Still no word on availability, but it seems like HP’s ready to go — anyone taking the plunge right away?

NTT plays with your olfactory sense now

    Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Mention NTT Communications and what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Why, cell phones, of course. Strangely enough, NTT Communications has decided to make a slight change in its course with a new Mobile Fragrance Communication service that allows audio visual content to be paired with specific smells emitted from a special device which is paired to a cell phone. Dubbed “fragrance communication”, it aims to enhance indoor environments by using pleasant odors. The idea is not new having being announced all the way back in 2005, but this new mobile version boasts the convenience of using mobile communication to download Fragrance Playlists as well as files containing recipes and other specific fragrances along with visual (GIF animation) and audio (MIDI) content.

A 10-day pilot will begin this Thursday, involving 20 test subjects (from both sexes) who will receive a kit that comprises of a cell phone and a fragrance device. Five testers will also be bestowed with Service Gateway modules that are able to control operation of devices in the Mobile Fragrance Communication system. The Web-connected gateway will then receive commands from a cell phone to activate fragrance right before the user gets home, allowing you to return to a nice smelling home that strips away the day’s stress while preparing you for a good night’s rest.

Users have the ability to download fragrance playlists from the NTT DoCoMo’s “i-mode” mobile Web site. This fragrance data will be transferred via the phone’s infrared port to a device loaded with base fragrances, where the latter will mix and emit the desired fragrance while the user enjoys audio or video on their handset. The downloaded playlists can also be edited and shared with other subscribers, so hopefully there won’t be April Fool’s pranks like a farting playlist or anything of that sort.

HP shows off the 2133 Mini-Note

    Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

If you’re looking for a tiny PC for a decent price, you’re really not going to have a hard time finding one. Since the Eee PC exploded onto the market last year, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. One of the latest to show up is the 2133 Mini-Note from HP.

This 9-inch laptop certainly has more to offer than the current Eee PCs on the market due to its 1024×768 resolution, 2GB of RAM and 7200 RPM hard drive. It also runs Vista, but I’m not really sure if that’s something to boast about (I run Vista, XP and OSX, and I still prefer the latter two over Vista any day).

Sure, the processor isn’t anything to write home about, being a VIA chip and all, but you really shouldn’t expect something like this to be doing much more than your average tasks anyway. While the 2133 may have the Eee PC outclassed in specs, it still can’t beat the price. Expect to pay somewhere around $750 for one of these.

    Bye Bye Standby

    Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Most electrical items in our homes are electrical vampires - even when they’re in standby mode, they tend to suck up power which could add up to a rather substantial amount at the end of the month. The Bye Bye Standby Energy Saving Kit offers a simple, cost-effective and convenient way to cut wasteful standby power while controlling electrical devices and reducing monthly electric bills. This action will not only help you save more money each month, it helps preserve our carbon footprint without causing even more harm to the environment.

The Energy Saving Kit is fast and easy to install with no rewiring and provides immediate savings. With Bye-Bye Standby you can power down connected electrical devices in your home, office, or school using a wireless remote control and smart socket adapters. Just one touch of the button on the remote control will cut wasteful standby power.

Assuming 6% to 26% savings, the annual estimated average savings by eliminating standby power leakage could range anywhere from $63.04 to $273.18. Guess it makes perfect sense to get this device that pays for itself in under two months when subject to regular use.
