iCoral iPod Dock: Made of Coral?

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Yesterday we talked about the iKICK iK500, the new dock made by Kicker which has above the average specifications when it comes to sound quality. Today, the topic is anther ipod dock, this time made by Copulare and entitled iCoral.

What makes the iCoral stand out is mostly the material used in the conception - artificial coral - and also the original design elements. On the other hand, the price can be a bit expensive for such a simple device - 1,200.

Technical features of the iCoral include a USB connection, S-Video output, and stereo analog outputs for headphones.

Cone feet and the coral helps to reduce resonances.

EU says “Yes” to mile-high calls

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Oh no. The European Commission said Monday that they plan to allow airlines to offer cellphone calls to passengers across the EU. This may sound like good news to cellphone carriers, airlines (who probably stand to gain a cut), and overzealous businessmen, but not to my ears. People (at least on the flights I’m on in the States) are already obnoxious enough on the tarmacs with their mobiles. Perhaps with some guidelines and/or rules, it may not be terrible, but I’m not holding my breath as airlines have done nothing to curtail those loudmouths, the same ones who don’t turn their phones off when they’re supposed to.

Now, I’m not against midair Internet access, mind you. Can’t get enough of that, and although the FCC voted to allow that over 3 years ago, we’re yet to see much of that in the States. Drag.

Triforce ensures you’re never without a stylus

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

I’m sure that some of you use a phone with a touchscreen. I’ve had at least three different phones that required a stylus, which meant that I’ve lost more than a couple of styli. Sure, you can always buy more, but wouldn’t it be better if you had a stylus that was actually attached to the phone? That’s exactly the idea behind the Triforce.

No, I’m not making some obscure Zelda reference, that’s the name of this interesting little phone accessory. It is simply a small piece of plastic with two points, each of which can be safely used as a stylus. This is attached to the end of a strap, which is attached to the phone. You’ll never have to worry about losing your stylus again. The Triforce should be available later in the month for an undisclosed price.

Everex’s new MyMiniPC: $500 and gOS-powered

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Everex is popping off a new gOS powered box tonight, given the unfortunate monicker of MyMiniPC. While $500 is way more than enough to get you started on a low-end Windows box (and even most of the way there toward a mac mini), the MyMiniPC comes equipped with a 1.86GHz Pentium T2130 and 512MB RAM running gOS “Space”, a 120GB drive, DVD±RW, firewire, four USB 2.0 ports, DVI and S-Video out gigabit Ethernet, media reader, and standard audio ins/outs. Everex is all playing up the whole space theme and MySpace integration, segueing that into avatar-based help experience called “Dave” (i.e. use the Ask Dave function to get help). So, what, does that make us all HALs? Too meta, Everex. Larger interface shot after the break.

Aurvana Live! Headphones from Creative

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Even though most people are addicted to ipod earpieces, there are some that want some bigger and better headphones. Like those ear cushioned headphones that we had to use back in the seventies.

The Aurvana Live! (exclamation point required) is one of the latest headphones from Creative. They have optimally contoured earcups in order to minimize internal sound distortion for accurate playback. These headphones can seal off all external noise and has a composite bio-cellulose diaphragm for “crystal clear and detail highs, coupled with deep, rich bass”.

I got a chance to try them out, and man, they played very, very well. I put in Transformers, and I was totally shut out from the rest of the world. I wouldn’t be wearing the Aurvana Live! listening to my iPod while crossing the street in New York City, but this is the perfect way to block out the rest of the world with your entertainment experience.

Not only does the Aurvana Live! sound good, but they look good as well. The design has a high gloss finish, and a gold-plated plug. All of these elements combine to form some quality headphones. You should be able purchase them off of the Creative website for £89.99.

Recently blocked Cuban blog wins Spanish digital journalism prize

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Its always nice to see a happy outcome, a Cuban blogger, who recently had her own site blocked by the Cuban government has won an award for that very site. Yoani Sanchez who writes the Generacion Y blog as a journal of her daily life in Cuba was given the Ortega and Gasset prize for digital journalism. This prize comes as an annual event that is presented by the Spanish newspaper El Pais. According to the paper, Sanchez was awarded the prize for “shrewdness in overcoming hurdles to freedom of expression in Cuba, her vivacious style and her drive to join the global space of citizen journalism.”

According to reports she hosts her blog on servers in Germany and was able to attract 1.2 million hits this past February. But perhaps more important than the award, Sanchez who spoke with Reuters via telephone was quoted as saying that “this is great encouragement for Cuban bloggers who are still at an embryonic stage.”

Thankfully the Cuban government has been getting a little looser lately when it comes to ‘modern’ freedoms such as cell phones, computers, DVD players and toasters. Hopefully some of this new found ‘freedom’ will find its way to the Internet access, which is currently still controlled by the government and we can only hope that Yoani Sanchez does not receive any unwanted attention courtesy of her blog, award and new found attention.
