US ready for new Nokia?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Meet the Nokia 3110 Evolve, shown off at Green gadgets forum in NYC is slated to arrive in Europe later this year.  Company representatives say no plans have been made to introduce this in the US.  And why would they?

Sure a billion mobile phones dumped into consumers pockets last year means a lot of waste, especially if those phones don’t contain the 50% recycled material cover like that of the 3110 Evolve.  To boot, over 60% of the Evolve can be turned back into other products.  These sound like things us Americans would have issues with, no?

The Evolve will feature Nokia’s smart power charger that reported uses 94% less power than the Energy Star requirements.  This one-two punch from Nokia could make it the first real “smartphone”.  Come on Nokia, announce plans for this at CTIA huh?

Just where is AT&T’s other colored Palm Centro?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

When AT&T unveiled their long rumored white Palm Centro, they also announced another color variation that was not going to be available at the time of launch. In addition to the ‘glacier white’ which hit the stores immediately, they announced the ‘obsidian black’ model which was supposed to be available “within a month or so” and while its been just over a month now, we Palm fans want what is coming. Plus as nice as the white model looks, especially in person, its just not a good color choice for everyone. The Centro announcement was made official on February 19 and it seems both AT&T and Palm have been pretty quite about this other color since the launch. Of course there is a lot of rumor and speculation over on the TreoCentral user forums as to when it will be available, personally I am hoping for sooner than later.

Worlds Lightest Phone

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

The Modu Mini phone has now reached an official status of “the lightest mobile phone in the world”. It weighs a puny 1.4 ounces and measures just .3 inches thick. The record was recorded by the Guinness book of world records.

The Modu Mini Phone is a gadget which acts as the core of a mobile phone and can work as a standalone device. The interesting thing is that the Modu also acts as a core of other “jackets” which can expand the functionality of the phone to make it in to a gaming phone, smartphone or music phone. Expect to see the Modu later on this year or early next year.

MSI unveils GX600-Enhanced gaming notebook

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

MSI must have received reactions from GX600 users that it decided to upgrade its gaming notebook to fully support the demand of today’s 3D games. The latest iteration of MSI’s GX600-Enhanced, which is how the notebook is now called, features Intel 45nm processing chips, increased memory and hard disk drive capacity.

What was previously an already powerful gaming right was made even powerful and resource-efficient with the new processor and a 3GB RAM and 320GB of hard disk storage. Gamers would definitely have a heyday playing their favorite MMORPG and other online games using the GX600-Enhanced.

Users of the previous version of this gaming notebook won’t miss too much of their old trusty machine though. The GX600 has retained the Turbo Drive Engine technology, the NVIDIA GeForce graphic chipset, Dolby 5.1 channel audio output, built-in SPDIF connection and HDMI compatibility.

If those specs were not enough to convince you that GX600 is powerful gaming rig, its other features might actually do. 15.4-inch non-glare LCD, 3D speakers, DVD super multi drive, Bluetooth, colorful W/A/S/D gaming buttons and a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam. Gamers would also love the GX600-Enhanced glaring flame-like graphic design on its lid and touchpad which speaks well of what games are today.

Oh sure, we’ve come across oodles of cameras designed to be mounted on or around one’s noggin, but c’mon, surely we aren’t the only folks who reckoned no one actually used these things, right? Taking a huge leap forward for lifebloggers and fans of recording sweet jumps everywhere, Yamaha’s Josh Hill managed to not only rock a GoPro Motorsports HERO camera for an entire race, but he also grabbed the gold in front of some 41,000 onlookers in the Minneapolis Metrodome. See kids — strapping gizmos onto your head isn’t just for nerds and basement dwellers, after all. Peep some footage from the headcam below.

Meet ApriPoko, Toshiba’s channel surfing helper-bot

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Finally, a robot that “gets” us. Researchers at Toshiba in Japan have created a talking bot that can be used as a voice-activated universal remote in addition to formulating plots about terminating humans. The 5-pound, 11-inch-tall android is called ApriPoko, and is capable of learning how to control electronics by watching you and asking questions about your behavior. When you use an infrared device, the robot senses the signal and asks the user “What did you just do?” If you say something akin to “I turned on the TV,” it will commit the command to memory, and you can operate those functions by voice. Apparently, the little guy is still in the R&D stages, but there are plans to turn this technology into a consumer device — one which the company swears will not kill you in your sleep.

The iriver NV Life: as stirring and confusing as life itself

Reincomm just announced the new iriver NV Life, the official name of its M20 prototype. New in that they’ve done away with the big, navigation pad of the original NV in favor of a more sleek, easily portable SatNav device with PMP functionality. Still, it’s a near spec-for-spec clone of the bigger, bulkier NV. Available in either 2GB ₩328,000 (about $367) or 4GB ₩358,000 (about $400) 4GB capacities, the SiRF Star III GPS device dedicates an SD slot to maps and second to augment the onboard flash. Inside, the WinCE 5.0-based device packs an FM-transmitter, DMB TV (with GPS PiP support), and a wide selection of codecs synonymous with the iriver name. The only downside is the display: 800 x 480 pixels spread across 7-inches of glass. On par with the industry but pretty poor when compared to cellphones which offer the same resolution on 2.8-inch displays.

The USB Thermometer

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

The hotness of summertime is still a few months away, and if you care about the outside temperature just buy a normal thermometer. On the other hand, if you’re worried about the inside temperature (of your house) this USB stick can be a good purchase.

Since you can set the thermometer to capture the temperature at any time interval you pick - from every second to 12 hours - it means the data can be pretty accurate. Afterwards, there is a useful function to the content to Word or Excel.

On top of the temperature, it can also measure humidity levels.

Priced at 12.
