LG electronics announces new addition to laundry line

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

LG Electronics has just rolled out a new home appliance, notably the SteamWasher with Allergiene cycle, touting it to be the first washing machine that has been given certification for being asthma & allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Apparently, LG hopes that this new home appliance will be able to do its part when it comes to helping out consumers and patients with asthma and allergic diseases. Sounds pretty nifty to me, but is it really that effective as claimed? Only real-world use of it will tell with time, but for the moment let us check out additional details concerning this LG offering after the jump.

The combination of a washer and dryer into one compact unit is ideal for consumers who want to do laundry at home and benefit from the allergen-reduction cycle, but do not have the space for both a washer and dryer or an external venting source necessary for conventional dryers. This unit runs on standard voltage electricity and is great for placement in closets; it’s also the perfect solution for space constrained apartments, businesses and vacation homes. At 4.2 cubic feet, this model is the largest capacity front-load combination unit available, enabling users to do larger loads of laundry, thereby saving time and energy.

The LG SteamWasher and Dryer Combo with Allergiene cycle utilizes LG’s TrueSteam Generator for real steam in the wash tub. The steam technology allows the wash to reach the appropriate temperature necessary to breakdown and wash out allergens - without harming fabrics. The Allergiene cycle has been expertly designed to effectively remove more than 95 percent of allergens and gently clean clothes. The use of steam technology offers exceptional cleaning power for outstanding performance and includes other features such as:

  • SteamWash - feeds hot steam into the top of the wash drum through a spray nozzle to penetrate the fabrics; removes dirt and stubborn stains; and better dissolves cleaning agents without causing excessive wear and tear on garments.
  • SteamFresh - the SteamWasher’s 20-minute steam-only cycle uses steam to freshen and reduce wrinkles on clothes- resulting in less ironing and fewer trips to the dry cleaner.

The LG SteamWasher and Dryer Combo with Allergiene cycle will come in a white finish, retailing for $1,999.

Robot drummer goes solo, plays solos

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Finally you can give your drummer his walking papers. Let’s be honest, he was the weak link in the band, right? From now on, all your percussive duties can be carried out by this ingenious bot, whose only duty in artificial-life is to roll around, find objects to bang on, and create funky little loops. Basically, the Yellow Drum Machine uses two microphones / sound sensors on its “head” to search out surfaces suitable for rocking, then uses two sticks to play a beat, record it, and accompany the playback. The end result is a surprisingly human — and wiggle-inducing — rhythm. Check the video after the break to see just how nasty this robot gets.

Researchers add eye control to Da Vinci robosurgeon

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Filed under: RobotsEye-controlled interfaces are far from revolutionary, but giving one of the world’s most famous robotic surgeons the ability to interpret eye movements is most definitely a huge leap forward in the pursuit of making operations less invasive. Reportedly, British researchers have implemented new software into the Da Vinci robosurgeon in order to enable human surgeons to “sit at a viewing console directing the movement of the robot’s mechanical arms inside the patient’s body.” Additionally, the program can track eye movements and “build up a 3D map of the area of tissue the surgeon is looking at,” and it seems as if the developments could eventually be used on a variety of other ER-based robots. Just make sure your doctor chugs a couple of Red Bulls before putting you under — wouldn’t want those eyes wandering aimlessly, now would we? (Psst, “no-go zones” are included, thankfully.)

Go on eBay, and this guy’s life can be yours

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Ian Usher, a 44-year old resident of Perth, Australia who’s originally from Darlington, England, is doing a big spring cleaning. For one week on eBay starting on June 22, he will auction off every part of his current life, from his house and all of its contents, even going as far as introducing the winner to his friends and to his job where he works for a rug importer. Although he loves his life in Perth and has the support of his employer and friends, everything sadly reminds him of his five-year marriage that broke up a year ago. After the auction, Usher wants to start all over in life with nothing but his wallet and his passport in his pockets, and do some traveling.

Let’s say you are interested in moving to Australia (or to the western city of Perth if you already live in Australia), how much would this set you back?  According to the valuation of the three-bedroom house, it could be at least $390,000 in U.S. dollars. So it’s really true that whatever “it” is, you can find “it” on eBay. This has got to be the biggest “it” ever, if not one of them!

Mini Solar-Powered Car

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Solar cars are, unfortunately, still in the research and development phase, although we saw one recently that drove from Texas to New York in 5 days. Despite being impressive, it’ll likely be years before we have one sitting in the driveway, charging. Until then this working miniature model will have to keep us entertained.

The world’s smallest solar powered car - it zooms along when the sun shines on the solar panel. No batteries - it gets its power just from the sun. No assembly required. Measures a tiny 3.3 x 2.2 x 1.4 cm. When the sun shines on the solar panel, the panel makes electricity that turns the motor and the wheels. A fun demonstration of solar power. Will also work when close to a strong artificial light source. Not for children under 3 years old, due to small parts.

Taipower announces the Teclast M26 portable media player

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

If you remember Taipower’s Teclast M25, you may recall that one of the items it lacked was a touchscreen display. However, the M25’s brother gets rid of the basic display and goes all touchscreen and in a way kind of looks like the ipod Touch. One of the main differences between this and the iPod, is that this will be a lot cheaper and doesn’t come with Wi-Fi, making it your basic touchscreen PMP.

Otheriwse, it comes in two different models, either black or white. It comes with a 2.6-inch WQVGA touchscreen, plays RMVB, RM, FLV, or AVI videos and comes with a TV-out option. No word on exact audio formats, although it uses Microsoft’s PlayFX. No word on pricing of the M26 as of yet.

MacBook Air hack unearths more relatively inaccessible USB connectors

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Posted Mar 22nd 2008 3:02PM by Darren Murph
Filed under: Laptops
Unfortunately, Apple’s macbook air still only arrives with a lone USB port. Save for using a dongle / hub, there’s really been no other way to connect a bevy of USB peripherals to the lappie — until now. Thanks to a curious hacker with a thing for perusing microchip documentation, he discovered that the internal ICH-8 southbridge chip actually has five low-speed and two high-speed USB controllers. After rolling up his sleeves and finding the correct pins, he was actually able to make the partially exposed MBA recognize and talk nice to a USB flash drive. We know, you USB-lovin’ Air owners are already dreaming up ways to add new ports to your slim slab of aluminum, so head on down to the read link if you’re ready to work (hard).
