2nd Annual YouTube Awards; and the winners are….

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

…boring. Okay, so that is just my opinion but I sure hope that there are a far more interesting videos out there than some of those who won. Sure, the ‘laughing baby’ is really cute but really, what’s so funny about the Potter Puppet Pals? I won’t criticize each and every winner and the nominees. After all, it’s the millions of YouTubers who have voted for these videos. Votes were cast during a week-long time frame and the winners were announced Friday. Twelve YouTube videos luckily won. I say luckily because not all are undeserving. But hey, they are the winners. They deserve at least to be recognized.

Here are the top winners:

  • Adorable: Laughing Baby from gsager1234
  • Commentary: LonelyGirl15 is Dead! from WHATTHEBUCKSHOW
  • Eyewitness: Battle at Kruger from Jason275
  • Instructional: How to solve a Rubik’s Cube from pogobat
  • Politics: Stop the Clash of Civilizations from AvaazOrg
  • Short Film: My Name is Lisa from sheltonfilms
  • Comedy: Potter Pupper Pals in “The Mysterious” from NeilCicierega
  • Creative: The Original Human TETRIS Performance from notsonoisy
  • Inspirational: Blind Painter from texascountryreporter
  • Music: “Chocolate Rain” Original Song by Tay from TayZonday
  • Series: The Guild - Episode 1: Wake-Up Call from watchtheguild
  • Sports: Balloon Bowl from davetheknave

Winners receive a trophy and an invitation to a special YouTube event later this year. And of course, how could I forget bragging rights. Let’s hope that next year’s winners won’t disappoint.

Topfield Freeview Playback Recorder

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

TV addicts will definitely find the Topfield Freeview Playback Recorder a must-have in their homes, since it helps you keep track of all your favorite TV shows even when you’re not lounging around at home.

Using a Topfield you can pause/rewind live TV and record two channels at the same time whilst watching two others simultaneously (picture within a picture-style). Perfect if you need to pop out for a cuppa or watch that wonder goal again and again. And you won’t have to agonize over which clashing shows to record; simply record them both at the same time. Amazing!

There are a couple of models available from Firebox at this point in time - the 250GB TF5800 that comes in aluminum or Black Panther colors, retailing for £219.95 a pop while the black 500GB TF5810 is decidedly more expensive at £349.95.

SMD Ultra Trencher 1 starts its new job: laying pipes and cables in the briny deep

What’s supposedly the largest deep-sea remote-controlled robot ever built was rolled out this week: the SMD Ultra Trencher 1 (UT1), a 50 ton, £10m ($19.8m) ROV the size of a small domicile (25.5 x 25.5 x 18.3 feet). Capable of sucking up two megawatts of power while using its “jet swords” trench deep sea pipelines up to a meter wide and 2.5 meters deep into the sea floor (while operating at a depth of up to 1500m), the UT1 is clearly just in time. We hear the CIA errant anchors are due to snip another three or four deep-sea internet backbone cables, so the UT1’s got its work cut out for it.

Dog Fetch-Machine for the Lazy

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

A video uploaded in YouTube displays the perfect gadgets for everyone who cares for their pets, but are too lazy to play with them.

As you can see on the video below, a sausage dog Dachshund named Jerry seems to be happy on its own playing fetch. Just imagine being relieved of the obligation to play fetch with your dog on a lazy Sunday morning. On a serious note, this seems to be the perfect mechanism for people with disabilities who keep animals in their houses for company.

Energy producing door from Fluxlab

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Nowadays people try to use alternative energy sources wherever it’s possible. There are a lot of reasons for this, among which the lack of natural resources and will to protect the environment are the most important. One of the methods to produce power real-time consists in the idea of using human efforts and energy that seems to be promising enough. gadgets like crowd farm produce electricity when people walk on them, another good idea was to combine a revolving door with an electricity generator.

The Revolution Door from Fluxlab has a generator built in and whenever a person goes through the door he/she produces energy. Apparently the idea for creation of such a device can not be considered as an innovative one, yet before this time there were some problems with its implementation. However this gadget is much more detailed and was probably designed as a conceptual piece to get people thinking about the usefulness of such a structure.

To my mind in the near future people will start to use such devices because of their efficiency and ecological compatibility. Moreover I hope that more efforts will be made in this domain, i.e. to make the power be generated by our own efforts without making any additional efforts.

Screen grabs: Nokia N770 Lives Free, Dies Hard

Even the appearance of Justin Long as the scrappy sidekick failed to keep Live Free or Die Hard from so-bad-it’s-bad territory — but the various appearances of a Nokia N770 bestowed with superpowers (sure, all handhelds can sign into satellite phone networks and interface with power station control systems) were pretty entertaining in their own right. We’re a little confused, though — didn’t the producers at least realize that our man Bruce would be using an N810 to chat up his fans online, though? One more shot after the break.

Allscripts; helping to bring digital medical records to the US

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Chicago-based electronic medical records provider Allscripts is merging with British company Misys PLC to create a firm that will manage data for a combined 150,000 practicing doctors in the U.S., around a third of the nation’s total. Last year, Allscripts and Dell Computers partnered to bring electronic prescribing to doctors for free. Now the new entity (which will keep the name Allscripts) plans to collaborate with Google, who are introducing their own service called Google Health, and with Microsoft.

Supporters of electronic medical record keeping, such as Allscripts’ customers, claim that it saves time and reduces mistakes. Now this is important because preventing mistakes can save lives. But detractors say that electronic medical record keeping is expensive and are worried about security. I agree that security is a concern, passwords can be cracked, and laptops and thumb drives can and do get lost or stolen. It wouldn’t be as easy for thieves to steal a whole file cabinet or bookshelf. So both sides have a point, and we’ll just have to wait and see if the Department of Health and Human Services can reach its goal of 50% of U.S. medical practices having electronic medical records by 2014 (right now it’s at 14%).

Microsoft unloads 500 GTA IV Xbox 360 Elite consoles

While folks at the Xbox 360 repair lab know good and well how to strip a console back to its birthday suit, Microsoft is going the opposite direction with its limited run of Grand Theft Auto IV Elites. The console itself is purportedly blasted with automotive quality paint and each one is individually numbered. Apparently, the 500 units — which look to come with a case full of peripherals — are only being dished out to press outlets and the like, so it seems your only shot at actually acquiring one is by scouring the second hand market. Or you could just steal one and toss a Molotov cocktail behind as you’re getting away — that’d be fitting, we guess.

OpenMoko unveils follow-up to the Neo1973, dubbed the Freerunner

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

OpenMoko has released some details for the follow up to the sweet looking, and well spec’d Neo1973. We first heard some rumblings of a follow up device back in mid-February and it seems that OpenMoko has begun showing it off. Being called the Freerunner, its slightly disappointing to look at, sporting a very similar style as the current Neo1973 (as shown above), but the specs should not be as disappointing.

The Freerunner will feature a 400 MHz Samsung CPU, 264MB ROM, 128MB RAM, Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi (802.11n), a microSD card has also been equipped with a three-axis accelerometer. According to OpenMoko’s Mickey Lauer, “the platform OpenMoko is a playground for developers.” Although it has not yet been confirmed, it is rumored to be hitting the market soon, perhaps as early as April, which would come during CTIA.

Keep reading for a few more images of the OpenMoko Freerunner…
