Napster brings digital music to O2 mobile subscribers

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Napster and O2 have reached an agreement that would make available 5 million music tracks to O2’s mobile subscribers. The deal is set to expand O2’s limited music database while bringing another milestone in Napster’s move towards transforming its services into a legitimate online song shop.

Under the Napster-O2 deal, digital tracks from Napster can be sold to UK users for 99p or a bundle of 5 tracks for £4, roughly around $2 per track. When O2 subscribers buy digital songs from the O2 portal, the digital tracks will be automatically sent to both their mobile phones and to their registered email addresses.

This deal would definitely have a positive impact on O2’s subscriber base. The Napster music database could be a major come on for additional user subscription to boost up its subscriber base. While for Napster, this is yet again a good partnership agreement that could further establish the music company as one of the major players in the online music market. O2 is a good addition to the growing number of mobile music practitioners that Napster has partnership with.

For the UK online music consumers, the Napster-O2 agreement is a welcome development as well. Having to download digital music tracks to both their mobile phones and desktop through email is an added service. Most of the younger generations have been using their mobile phones also as their digital music player.

But most importantly, the Napster-O2 deal would also impact on the growing problem of music piracy, which Napster incidentally was a major player.

Samsung’s Miniskirt Season 2: return of the taffeta tramps

Samsung returns with the sequel to its SCH-C220 “Miniskirt” phone. Besides sporting a handful of new seasonal colors, “smile shot” super happy face tracking tech, and models swathed in bad Jersey bridesmaid’s dresses, the most notable new feature on the SCH-C225/SPH-C2205/SPH-C2255 (depending upon S.Korean carrier) is haptic feedback. God only knows how that surgically precise vibration would come in handy on a 10.9-mm slider with a tactile, physical keypad. Hmm.

D’Cube intro’s necklace PMP

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Usually, people just put their music devices in their pocket, hold it, or clip it on, no one really wears their mp3 player as a necklace. However, this new Diny D7 can be worn as necklace, and that’s something that is for the most part new. One of the most popular clip-on MP3 players is the ipod Shuffle, but this one is the few that could be worn as a necklace. Personally, I would just put my iPod in my pocket and leave it there, even if I could wear it as necklace, I probably wouldn’t.

Anyway, what makes this possible to be worn as a necklace is that it’s small and really portable. It measures out at 59.5 x 33 x 11mm, and has a screen size of 1.3-inches. It even plays videos with formats such as MP4 SP and WMV at 25fps, although I am not sure why you would want to watch video on a 1.3-inch display. For audio, it plays MP3, WMA, OGG, and WAV. It even comes with a built-in radio and comes in two different options, either 2GB or 4GB. No word on availability as of yet, but the 2GB will sell for $77 and the 4GB for $97.

USBee is flexible, stays cool

Monday, March 17th, 2008

How many times have you broken a USB flash drive? I’m pretty hard on mine, and I can think of three different drives that I’ve broken. Two of them had the USB connector broken off due to me just being clumsy while the third’s outer casing just kind of fell apart. This is why I usually take interest in any such drives that claim to be resistant to breakage such as this USBee (get it?) concept drive.

This bee-themed concept drive utilizes a combination of a silicon and aluminum shell which allows for a bendable neck. The ability to bend at the neck will help to prevent both the drive and the USB port from getting broken. The black stripes are actually a cleverly-disguised cooling system to keep it from getting too warm. This is currently only a concept, so who knows if we’ll ever see it in production.

Virtual Box; allowing Windows apps to run inside Linux

Monday, March 17th, 2008

You love your Linux and Linux works perfect for you. But, sadly, most people will come across those files that they just need Windows to access. So, during some critical moment, you might need to reboot your computer to start up Windows just to open a tricky Microsoft office file or some other Windows application, which is just as frustrating as it looks. Now won’t it be cool to run Windows file seamlessly on your Linux? Yes it is, and you can do it now right away with your Linux OS.

You can do it by following a few steps at LifeHacker and you’re good to go with. The concept is using partially the same method as those Mac users who are currently running Windows on their Macs. This is called the Parallel’s Coherence, so users can have Windows apps running right on your Linux desktop and sharing the same desktop files. The process of doing so takes a little bit longer as compared to installing a Windows XP OS but you just need some free tools and a Windows installation disk and the best part is, aside from the Windows disk it’s all free!
