General Mobile reveals the ultra-geeky GM500 Watchphone

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

If you were impressed by the LG watchphone, take a look at General Mobile’s newest addition, the GM500 phone. This marvel was shown off recently at the CeBIT 2008 and works on triband GSM (900/1800/1900MHz) networks. While there is obviously nothing as fancy as 3G or Wi-Fi, you do get GPRS, Bluetooth, and USB support along with a 1.5-inch OLED touchscreen. There is 128MB of space with no word on expansion and a host of applications including a stopwatch, world clock, calendar, and voice memo functions. It can play MP3’s, although with only 128MB of memory we are not sure anybody would be too enamored by this idea, but with its A2DP Bluetooth stereo profile, might as well load up some good ones to listen to on the go, right? There are no details about its pricing or availability yet but the question still remains: Are you ready to play Dick Tracy?

Mini digital camera looks like a twin lens Rolleiflex

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

The more we get away from traditional camera designs, with sleeker, smaller digital cameras, the more nostalgic I get about old film cameras. This miniature digital camera, the Rolleiflex MiniDigi AF5.0 from Komomura Corp., is modelled after the legendary twin lens Rolleiflex, which were everywhere a few decades ago, and are still sold today. The 5 megapixel retro camera is priced at 43,050 Japanese Yen (about $420).

Nokia N78 with US 3G gets the FCC treatment

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

We have yet another phone leaked via the FCC, this time its the Nokia N78 with support for US 3G. If all goes as well, we’ll all be seeing just how the Nokia N78 will fare with the 3G networks currently available in the US (read: the AT&T network since it’s the only operator offering 3G in the US at the time). If you remember, the Nokia N78 is supposed to be the successor of the N73, and a lesser powerful version of the N82. It features a 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, built-in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, an FM transmitter, support for microSD storage cards up to 8GB in size, integrated A-GPS, and of course, that funky old keypad. Look for some more official leaked photos from the FCC to be available soon.

Gets Rid of Wall-Warts - Tributaries Power Strip

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Do you have unsightly wall-warts? I didn’t even know I had this problem until I got the new T12 Power strip which replaces those bulky AC plugs, also known as wall-warts. Who knew?

This serious power strip offers great flexibility, as eight of the 12 plugs can be rotated up to 90 degrees. Handy (though Gizmodo calls it overkill) in one convenient package, the T12 offers a highly effective “4320 joules of surge suppression” and noise filtering for AC power, and signal-line protection for telecomm (RJ-11), network (RJ-45), and cable, antenna, and satellite (F-connector) signals.

Lack of competition sends Blu-ray player prices upward

Late last month, we actually posed the question of buying a Blu-ray player now (being that the format war is over and all), or waiting things out until prices sink and Profile 2.0 players flood the market. Aside from the playstation 3 — which is actually priced fairly reasonably if you were in the hunt for a new console anyway — it seems as though hd dvd’s exit has actually caused Blu-ray player prices to creep back upwards. Granted, this is about as far from surprising as it gets — after all, it’s nothing short of supply and demand working its magic. Still, it wasn’t too long ago that we saw Toshiba actively putting pressure on the Blu camp to reduce prices in order to stay competitive, and now that said pressure has vanished, stickers on the whole have headed north. Ah well, it’s not like the consumer didn’t ask for this, um, right?
