Gadgetell Review: Jetboil for explorer types

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Product: Jetboil Personal Cooking System
Price: $89.95
Rating: 9 out of 10
Pros:Simple to use, small to bring, having a fresh cup of joe miles from civilization is key
Cons: I broke the starter, maybe a fluke.  Can’t fly with fuel, thanks a lot, terrorists
Overall: A fantastic solution for anyone with limited space but likes to eat/drink hot things.

Adventure gear must meet 2 prerequisites to work well for me: 1) be small and light and 2) work extremely well.  I am here to report, the Jetboil does both equally well.  I took the Jetboil on the high seas recently, testing its resolve (and mine).  It was fantastic to make coffee each morning and soup in the evening.  It is truly amazing how some hot food can improve your outlook.

The jetboil packs up in the cooking thermos, so it’s footprint is very small, perfect for hiking, camping and in my case small-boating.  Assembling the unit is very simple, everything fits together real well.  Once together a simple push of the starter button lights the flame.  The unit heats up super quick thanks to the unique FluxRing that more efficiently uses the flames heat.  Burn time is shorter, smaller fuel units to pack.

I did end up cracking the ceramic-looking insulator around the starter wire that led to it shorting out and needing to be lit by another method.  It was replaced by Jetboil without question and was done so quickly.  I call it a fluke and applaud their high customer service mark.

Using the cooking pot as the cup/bowl is smart as I hate washing things whether at the campsite or on a rolling sea.  A gimbaled mount would have been fantastic for this unit on my trip, so it could roll with the waves rather than me holding it gingerly so as not to fall over.  They do offer a hanging option but the idea of a swinging cup of boiling liquid was less entertaining than just holding it in place.

The coffee press worked well and packs up equally well.  I used it as directed even after seeing online you can run it as a coffee pull and get better results.  I had no grounds escape so it was non issue for me.  And the coffee was good.

We ended up using the Jetboil as a compliment to the charcoal grill.  It handled side dishes, soup and coffee with ease.  Cooking times needed to be recalculated but that is to be expected with something advanced like this fun gadget.  We also cooked eggs over the just the burner.  Overall, it was a joy to have aboard.

Ballpoint pen utensil concepts

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Has anyone else heard that the average office desk is actually dirtier and more bacteria-ridden than an average toilet? I can’t remember where I read about this, but I swear the gist of the article was that germaphobes would be better off having a toilet-seat picnic than skipping the lunchroom and eating at their desk.

True or not, the Italian designers behind this set of “din-ink” concept pens obviously didn’t hear about it. Otherwise they would never have thought to encourage eating while signing those contracts or putting last-minute touches on that report at work.

They also seem to have forgotten about all those people who chew on their pen caps. How’d you like to get jabbed in the lip with a fork tine or sliced by the jagged blade of a knife while taking a thoughtful pause in the middle of penning the Great American Novel?

Cubic MP3 player

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

All of us who like listening to music but are bored to death with our old MP3 players try to find something original, stylish and useful. Now there is a possibility to do so and make someone else happy at the same time.

World Vision, an international relief and development organization, announced the release of Nanum charity MP3 player designed by Samgmin Bae. World Vision plans to donate all earned money to low-income families with children. Moreover, it should be mentioned that in contrast to other charity items that are already on the market and donate only a portion of earnings, MP3 Nanum was produced, manufactured, and distributed for the sole purpose of sharing. It is a 100% charity item. So, now you can help other people applying no extra efforts. The gadget represents quite a usual, but still stylish, MP3 player that is made in the form of a cube. Of course, there are no equalizer, display or any of that stuff, yet a lot of colours are available, enabling you to choose the one you like the most.

Besides the fact that this MP3 player represents a charity item its unique simplicity and originality will probably attract people’s attention; helping producers to increase sales and donate even bigger amounts of money to low-income families.

Secure chair

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Probably all of us encountered such a situation when in a restaurant, café, or even a public library there was no secure place to hang our jackets or hand bags. The only way out of this situation was to hang all our clothes on a public coat rack, or across the back of our chair. Yet, despite the fact that this is the only solution, it can hardly be considered as a secure one, because there is quite a considerable possibility to “lose” something.

A new solution for this problem was found by Erohina Yulia. Her concept that is named “Chair Wardrobe” enables us to place our belongings in a secure location and keep them within reach. Given gadget is designed in such a way that at first sight it appears to be a normal usual chair. However, it has an important distinctive feature, which consists in the fact that the inside of the concept chair represents a storage or wardrobe for your special items. The design is made of two plastics, which are different in colours, signifying the double features of the chair. Moreover there is a possibility to choose different materials and colours.

Thus, there is no need to worry about your belongings because they will always be close to you. Besides that the design of this chair that is quite modern and stylish makes it possible to use it as a decoration to your interior. So, probably in near future we would be able to see this concept not just in public places, but in our friends’ apartments as well. Yet, it’s not the fact that this gadget will ensure safety for you stuff.

XFPS Adds a Keyboard to Your PS3

XFPS has come up with an exciting little gadget in the form of an adaptor that will allow you to hook up a USB or PS/2 keyboard and mouse to your PS3. Details on this are still a little sketchy. From what I understand, controller keys are mapped to the keyboard. There is some question as to whether or not you will be able to choose where the buttons are mapped to, but in my experience, I would say that there is an extremely high likelihood that you will.

If I could get my Razer combo working on a PS3 I just might consider buying one. The only drawback to this bad boy seems to be the price. It is $99, which is a lot of money for an adapter.

Continental rolling out DirecTV, IM, and email to 225 planes

Filed under: Laptops, Portable Video, Transportation, Wireless In another mostly positive step for in-flight entertainment options, Continental Airlines will be rolling out DirecTV along with email and IM service on 225 of its planes starting next January — the majority of its domestic fleet, according to Reuters — although watching some tube will reportedly cost economy passengers six bucks-a-pop. Continental is teaming up with LiveTV on the venture, a subsidiary of JetBlue which also provides that airline with DirecTV, XM, and, more recently, limited Yahoo email and IM services courtesy of its 800MHz bandwidth acquisition. LiveTV will both provide and install a majority of the in-plane hardware in exchange for most of the revenue from economy section TV viewers; the 36 DirecTV channels will be free to first class passengers, and anyone with compatible devices and a Yahoo account can connect to the flying hotspots.

Analyst: Motorola may exit handset business

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Filed under: CellphonesHey, that’s what Nomura International analyst, Richard Windsor, told his clients in a note published this morning. Instead of handsets, Moto may choose to refocus on becoming an “enterprise and government company.” While on a roll, Richard also raised speculation that a Chinese company might scoop up the troubled Moto before calling it “unlikely as those vendors don’t have much of an idea how to fix Motorola’s problems.” Problems he attributes to the platform and software, not hardware. Man Moto, what a long hard fall it’s been since your 2005 RAZR heyday.

Tesla Roadster gets out of air bag requirement for green behavior

Filed under: Transportation Apparently when you’re saving the planet with an all-electric car, there’s no need to kill yourself over safety. The Tesla Roadster has been granted a waiver in regards to advanced air bags by the NHTSA, since the “public interest is served by encouraging the development of fuel-efficient and alternative-fueled vehicles.” Standard air bags are still included, and Tesla apparently tried to comply with the advanced requirement, but told the NHTSA that it’s in the hole financially, and would have to cancel the planned sedan and “ultimately have to terminate its operations” if forced to go through with the fancy air bags. All 2008 Roadsters have been pre-sold, and Tesla is supposed to start delivering the cars in Q1 2008.
