Everex’s Cloudbook postponed for “tweaks”

Remember how we told you Everex’s little gOS-sporting Cloudbook was headed to Wal-Mart this month (today, to be specific)? Well hold your check book, friend-o — they ain’t done with it. According to the company’s director of marketing, Paul Kim, the system requires, “A couple of last minute software tweaks,” before it’s ready for prime-time. There’s no word on when it will make an appearance, though we’re inclined to think this won’t be a major delay, though you never know. Should shipments alight, we’ll be the first to share the good news.

Chair Wardrobe

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Now here’s a good idea — a chair that doubles as a wardrobe! Handy for small NY or Japanese apartments and a great place to hang your coat at a restaurant.

Designed by Erohina Yulia, it was a reddot Design winner last year so let’s hope it makes it out of the concept stage.

Sony’s David Reeves says PS3 victory in sight

Apparently Sony has decided to start both hangin’ tough and unleashing the fury in the console wars, at least in Europe. According to SCEE president, CEO, and player-hater David Reeves, 2008 will be the year that the PlayStation 3 takes the gloves off and makes a nasty dent in the UK games market, amongst others. While not specifying official sales numbers for the machine, Reeves stated that the company has sold over a million systems in December across PAL territories, and went on to say that in some markets like Switzerland and France, the PS3’s installed base outnumbers the Xbox 360’s. Of course, it’s easy to find small victories like monthly sales figures, but Sony’s really going to have to break out the BFGs if it wants to tackle the big boys.

Gadgetell Rant: iPod Docks will start WWIII

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Enough, no more for the love of God.  Today, thanks to sales of Apple’s wonder gadget, the iPod, there are enough iPod docks for every man, woman and child on the planet to have 2.  There is no need to make another one.  We must end iPod dock proliferation.

You’ll find these docks in hotels, on TVs, and near computers thanks to the likes of companies like Belkin, DLO, JVC and countless others.  Literally countless others.  You can’t get away from them.  The time has come to call for an end of iPod enrichment.  We need no more.

An Anti-iPod Dock Proliferation (AiDP) treaty is needed, to be signed by all nations to insure no more iPod docks will be built.  I am pretty sure we could get funding from Microsoft.  Undoubtedly, some rogue evil nation will stockpile docks, perhaps even go so far as to hide them in the desert from our treaty inspectors.  We must be vigilant in our stance against any further developments in the iPod dock arena.  Surely, China will not sign this treaty as almost every dock I’ve seen has been produced there, and thus it represents a sizable chunk of their GDP.  They won’t give that up with out a fight.

So, the AiDP Treaty will certainly erupt in brash negotiations only leading to the inevitable iWar, pitting treaty signers against China.  All over an iPod dock.  Here is my plea:  stop.  Please.  We’ve enough docks for a our cars, planes, trains, desks, beds, TVs, stereos, beach house, out house, dog house… We are all set.

At the very least, please stop sending me links to new docks.

*disclaimer: none of the statements, as usual, are factual.  And yes, I actually do want links to new docks.  I can’t help myself.

equinux offers up TubeStick hybrid USB TV tuner

If neither of Elgato’s latest from Macworld tickled your fancy, there’s a decent shot you may like what equinux has going on instead. The TubeStick hybrid is the firm’s newly announced USB TV tuner, which is housed in a diminutive chassis that won’t block nearby ports and offers up OTA reception of NTSC, ATSC and digital (QAM) signals. Furthermore, the unit comes wearing the whitest of white outfits and also touts an external antenna and a one-month trial of the TubeToGo software. Yes, this critter will play nice with Windows machines as well, but we hear it tries to avoid such predicaments whenever possible. Ready to snag your own? Catch one next month for $129.

Are one in three iPhones sold being unlocked?

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Filed under: CellphonesWhile it likely won’t come as much of a surprise to those reading this, it seems that Apple’s recently released iPhone sales numbers and AT&T’s customer number don’t exactly match up, leading those ever so insightful analysts to conclude that many of the phones are being sold with the sole intention of being unlocked. What is somewhat surprising, however, is exactly how many phones that might be. As MacWorld reports, Apple says it sold 3.7 million iPhones in 2007, while AT&T says it signed up about two million or so iPhone customers during the same time period. While those aforementioned analysts point out that Apple’s numbers were boosted by 300,000-400,000 sales in Europe, and likely a few sold over the holidays that were yet to be activated, that still leaves over a million iPhones running free out there. If you do the math, that seems to suggest that roughly one in three iPhones sold are being unlocked although, obviously, we’re not about to get a confirmation on that number from anyone.

You already loved it in its USB 2.0 incarnation. Now check the HDD Stage Rack with an additional eSATA interface. Who couldn’t use an extra 315MB/s transfer rate for their 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch disks? Yours now for $57.15 before those excessive shipping costs are factored in.

Samsung’s seductive L310 mobile phone

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Black and gold are the sexy way to go in the new line of glamorous mobile phones from Samsung. The L310 is sure to dazzle and enthrall all divas (and wannabes) with its chic flair and stylish design. Looking more like a fashion accessory than a cell phone, when flipped open, the ‘S’ shaped, gold-colored metal hinge renders an extra little dash of dazzle. It probably should have stopped there (all this dazzle), but it didn’t. For a bit more splendor, the camera on the cover is also glittered.

There are some cool specs that come with this glitzy new phone. Distinctive patterns and a hidden message icon indicate incoming calls and MMs. Multi media features include a 2.0-megapixel camera, MP3 player, external memory slot and Bluetooth connectivity. It also has a shopping list, which enables users to add and edit shopping items, calculate calorie consumption and also a fragrance type feature customized to the user’s favorite food and beverage.

In short, you can do almost everything with the Samsung L310 except eat this phone.

Coming along just in time for the day of the valentine, the Samsung L310 will be available in Russia and Hungary from February onwards for 240 Euros, which is around $350. Later it will be expanded into other European countries and hopefully, the US.
