Women targeted by Disney Cell phone service

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

The House of Mouse is going to cater to the female segment of the population with its new cell phone service, and this time in Japan. As we all know, Walt Disney’s revolves mostly around children with its expansive library of lovable characters, nefarious villains, and superbly orchestrated soundtracks. This time round though, Disney has set its sights on adult women in Japan with this new Disney Mobile service that will roll out on March 1st. Going into this venture together with Softbank Mobile, Disney Mobile’s content consists of (not a comprehensive list, mind you) ring tones, videos and games that hope to reach out to female Disney fans who are currently in their 20s and 30s. In addition, users have the option to customize phone screens and emails with Disney-theme graphics.

I wonder if Disney will be extra cautious by embarking on this new project, since a similar cell phone service was started in the US back in 2006 that targeted kids, but apparently the service had to be closed after Disney failed to convince enough outlets to sell its phones and related services. Do our friends in Japan think differently and embrace Mickey Mouse and friends wholeheartedly? I guess only time will tell. With Disney having plans to release up to three new phone models a year, this idea might still take off considering how these handsets are manufactured by reliable brands such as Sharp.

Who do you think will be the bigger winner? Will Mickey and friends prevail over, say, Hello Kitty? After all, the latter is also very big in Japan and should there be a similar mobile service in the Land of the Rising Sun, the results will certainly be more than interesting. I think that Disney would do well to also concentrate on the Nintendo DS platform if the company wants to push the image of Mickey and his cohort to that particular age group, since the penetration rate for the DS is extremely high in Japan.

Birmingham, AL totally confused by OLPC purchase

Filed under: LaptopsWe knew we were in for some rough chuckles when Birmingham, Alabama signed up to provide an OLPC XO to every K-8 student student last December, but we didn’t think they’d be this silly from the get-go: apparently the mayor’s office, which negotiated the deal, is now saying the school board needs to add WiFi to every school for the laptops to work. That’s news to us — the mesh-networking XO was designed to be used in rural parts of the third world, after all — but we’re still puzzling out what mayoral advisors John Katopodis and Bob McKenna meant when they said they’re “trying to make the whole city WiFi,” or where they got a quote of $39 per school to enable wireless access. Of course, the only response from the school board was one member who worried about students accessing porn — which seems to be a real theme with the XO — but for some reason we’re not at all surprised that bureaucratic officials have totally missed the point of the OLPC project.

SpaceShipTwo, White Knight Two designs unveiled: aren’t they cute?

Filed under: Transportation As expected, Sir Richard Branson has just unveiled the final designs of SpaceShipTwo and White Knight Two, Virgin Galactic’s planned commercial “spaceliner” and its corresponding carrier plane. At today’s American Museum of Natural History launch event, Branson once again reiterated his lofty expectations for space tech in general and the six-passenger vehicle in particular, promising to promote privatization and more widespread research by offering outside organizations access to its launch system schematics. So far, Virgin has reportedly signed up 200 committed passengers willing to pay $200,000 for a 2010-or-later suborbital flight, but for now, all they can do is look at the pretty pictures in the gallery below.

SPOT Personal Tracker gets reviewed

Although SPOT’s personal GPS tracker was announced last August, it’s just now managed to navigate its way into reviewers hands. Essentially, this unit is supposed to enable the carrier to upload real-time tracking data to friends and family back home, but according to GPS Magazine, that was easier said than done. The unit was hailed as extraordinarily rugged, long-lasting (battery life) and able to work in areas without cellular coverage. Sadly, its internal GPS receiver was so insensitive that even “moderate tree cover prevented the unit from getting reliable signals.” Additionally, there’s no way to tell whether or not a message has been sent successfully (or received), and the lack of geofencing support was also a letdown. All in all, SPOT seemed to be a good bet for hikers, boaters, etc. traveling to remote areas simply due to its ability to ring for help if necessary, but for the average joe (or youngster) hoping to transmit step-by-step data back home, it seems the built-in GPS receiver just ain’t cut out for all that.

Vision crosses the million-pictures-per-second with Phantom V12

Filed under: Digital Cameras Vision Research already has some pretty capable high-speed cameras under its belt, but the company looks to have outdone even itself with its latest model, which is apparently the first such camera to hit the one-million pictures-per-second mark. Of course, to grab that impressive burst of images you’ll have to settle for a 256×8 resolution, although you’ll still get a decent 6,315 pictures-per-second with the maximum 1280×800 resolution. Otherwise, you can expect 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage depending on the exact model (which includes both color and monochrome options), “unprecedented light sensitivity,” and Vision’s Extreme Dynamic Range feature, which’ll let you capture two different exposures within one single frame. No word on a price, although some things are probably better left unsaid.

Belkin announces Neoprene MacBook Air Sleeves

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Are you planning on picking up the new Macbook Air when it goes on sale in the not-too-distant future? Well if you’re going to pick up something that expensive, you’re not going to want to carry it around in a manila envelope all day. I don’t care how much of a wow factor you’re going to get when you whip it out that first time, it won’t last. You’ll need to get something that will actually offer a little protection while making it look good. Belkin has the perfect answer.

Belkin has lined up a few different sleeves that should appeal to a wide range of MacBook Air carriers. The low-end Slim-Fit Sleeve is a simple neoprene sleeve that uses only a flap to contain your new notebook. The Leather/Neoprene Sleeve differs itself not only by the fabrics used, but by having a zipper as well. The Vertical Sleeve gives you the option of using a shoulder strap, rather than just carrying it in your hand or inside of another case. The cases will range from $29.99 to $49.99 and are set to hit shelves in the very near future.

Poll: How did HTC mishandle the video driver controversy?

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Posted Jan 23rd 2008 9:45AM by Evan Blass
Filed under: Cellphones, Features, Portable Video In case you haven’t been following all the drama over at Engadget Mobile, Taiwanese smartphone kingpin HTC is seeing a rather unexpected customer backlash over sub-par video playback in recent devices employing Qualcomm’s MSM7xxx chipsets — apparently, handsets like the popular TyTN II and Touch Cruise were purposely shipped without drivers that would take advantage of the embedded ATI Imageon acceleration hardware. And now, instead of issuing a mea culpa or at least providing the drivers for a small fee, HTC has basically suggested in a recent statement that consumers will need to upgrade to future products if they want “high-resolution video support.” Obviously customers are outraged, with the statement only fueling further talk of a class action lawsuit.

We think it’s time for the Engadget community at large to weigh in on this snowballing controversy: what (if anything) should HTC have done differently in order to maintain the proactive, customer-friendly image that it has up to this point been known for?

What should HTC have done differently with respect to the video driver controversy?

Microsoft drops Zune 2.3 software update; lots of fixes

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Zune owners take note, Microsoft has dropped the latest update for the Zune, the software update which is 2.3 will include lots of fixes, but sadly not any new features. With a slight confusion possible with the ‘2.3’, this is not the previously released firmware update 2.3. The software update 2.3 includes “performance enhancements around set-up, sync and as always general reliability.”

Apple posts $1.58 billion profit; reports best quarter ever

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Apple has posted some exciting news, their first quarter earnings have been the “best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history.” The first quarter earnings posted a revenue of $9.6 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.58 billion. These numbers are up from a revenue of $7.1 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1 billion during the same quarter in the previous year.

These record breaking numbers come from sales that included 2.3 million computers, 2.3 million iPhones and 22 million iPods during the quarter. While the market share of the Mac may not be what the PC holds, its very hard to argue that these are impressive numbers.
